Several Wounded in U.N. Police Shootout in Kosovo

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Serbia and Montenegero (*******) - A dispute over Iraq led to a shootout on Saturday in the Kosovo town of Mitrovica between several American and one Pakistani U.N. police officers in which several officers were wounded and some may have died, U.N. police sources said.

Another report said Jordanian police were involved in the shooting, which broke out at a prison in the U.N. compound in the northern Kosovo town.

"This afternoon at the Mitrovica detention center there was a shooting incident involving international policemen," U.N. police spokesman Neeraj Singh told *******.

"Some international police officers were injured...there may be fatalities," he added.

The deputy director at the health center in Mitrovica, Milan Ivanovic, told reporters a female American officer, critically injured in the shootout, had died. He said he was treating several other prison officers for gunshot wounds.

Singh declined to give the number of injured, or of any dead or to disclose the nationalities involved. Asked about the cause of the incident, Singh said: "That is a matter of investigation ...and the situation now is stable and under control."

Media reports citing a variety of sources said up to four U.N. police officers may have been killed. One report said two lay covered by white sheets inside the U.N. compound.

A ******* witness close to the scene saw a female U.S. police officer lying motionless on the ground, covered by a coat.

Now, BBC is reporting it too - so far, only little info:(

UN police hurt in Kosovo shooting

UN police officers have been wounded in a shootout near a prison in northern Kosovo, UN officials say.
"The incident involved international police officers. There may be fatalities," a UN police spokesman was quoted as saying by AP news agency.

Unconfirmed reports say an American UN policewoman was killed and six injured.

It is unclear what caused the shootout in the town of Mitrovica, which was the scene of ethnic violence between Serbs and ethnic Albanians in March.

U.N. Police Die in Kosovo Prison Shootout
10 minutes ago

By NEBOJSA MARKOVIC, Associated Press Writer

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Serbia-Montenegro - A shootout at a prison in Kosovo killed at least two international police officers and injured several others, a U.N. spokesman said. An American policewoman was among the dead, a Serb doctor said.

Serb and international sources in the city told The Associated Press that the U.N. police officers started shooting at each other and that the shootout lasted for about 10 minutes. The information could not be immediately confirmed.

Four Jordanian police officers were arrested in connection with the incident, a NATO (news - web sites) souce told AP on condition of anonymity.

Neeraj Singh, the spokesman for the U.N. police, confirmed that two international officers were killed as a result of the shootout. He would not disclose their nationalities.

"There has been a shooting incident," Singh said. "The incident involved international police officers."

Milan Ivanovic, a doctor in the hospital in the Serb-held part of Kosovska Mitrovica, told The Associated Press that an American woman officer died of her injuries. Other Americans were among the injured, he said.

"Their wounds are predominantly in the chest and abdomen," Ivanovic said. "They were caused by firearms and possibly explosive devices."

It was not immediately clear what caused the shootout in the prison in tense Kosovska Mitrovica, which has been the scene of ethnic violence between Serbs and ethnic Albanians a month ago.

Singh said that "police are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident."

Kosovska Mitrovica has long been a flashpoint for troubles between ethnic Albanians on the southern side of the Ibar River and Serbs, who live in the northern part of the city 25 miles from the capital, Pristina.

Kosovo became a U.N. protectorate in 1999, after NATO launched a 78-day air war to stop former President Slobodan Milosevic (news - web sites) from cracking down on ethnic Albanians seeking independence.

There are some 3,500 U.N. police officers serving in Kosovo alongside a 6,000-strong local force.

Saddam was no doubt a dictator, and a bad one at that, but because the case for war was overstated. The pov of the average person moved from being impartial to beliving that this man was helping terrorists attack america. Whereas in Britain it was that Saddam could strike British assests (namely Cyprus) with WMD, which turned out to be bull****. But the difference in points of view, by the brits that this was a war against saddam not al-qaeda, whereas for americans this was part of the war on terror.

The pov that all arabs are bad, the assumtion that it was the arabs that caused this incident to happen are other examples I could use.

Not really.

The only thing the U.N. has ever done successfully is conducting and supervising elections, The provisional Constitution that spells out the legal path to give sovereignty back to the Iraqi's was subject to US oversight and is now in place. All the U.N. will do is negotiate the implementation of it, as the final Constitution is ratified and national elections are held.

The U.N. will not control the policy, they will simply give their stamp of approval and oversee the elections. Read the provisional Constitution that CPA ratified 60 days ago, it's all part of the plan set forth and is on schedule

But I'd like to add that the distortion here is that the President has consistently asked for a UN presence in Iraq, from the beginning. It was the UN that decided not to authorize a UN force, and when they finally got around to establishing a HQ in Iraq, they were chased away by suicide bombers.

UN police die in Kosovo shooting

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40051000/jpg/_40051349_kosovoap203body.jpg

Three UN police officers have been killed in a shootout near a prison in northern Kosovo, UN officials say.

The two Americans and one Jordanian were killed in the shooting. They appear to have died after being shot by colleagues, a UN spokesman said.

Eleven others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

It is unclear what caused the shootout in the town of Mitrovica - the scene of bitter violence between Serbs and ethnic Albanians in March.

However the UN said no Serbs or ethnic Albanians were involved.

Reports suggest the shooting was the result of an argument between the officers, but the UN has yet to confirm the cause.

Forensic teams are at the scene and an investigation has been launched.

Mitrovica has long been a flashpoint for troubles between ethnic Albanians on the southern side of the Ibar River and Serbs, who live in the northern part of the town.

More than 3,000 international police serve as part of the UN mission in the UN-administered province and are responsible for law and order.

If you ask me, it looks VERY similiar to the incident in 2002 where Pakistani border guards fired on US troops.

Pakistan has very little control over its military.

Many of their soldiers are islamic fundementalists at heart. Im guessing this is what happened here.

1 Austrian wounded.

11 others wounded, whatever that means. Plenty of people to from whom to deduce the incident from.

f*** great . Soon enough the Jordanian officials would claim that the shooter was menthally sick . We happened something like that in my place (only this time Jordanian soldier shoot 7 young girls to death , and Jordanians claimed that the soldiers is crazy ) .

f*** great . Take my word on it .

People in the military, who loose control happens all over the world. Actually I think, even among the danish troops in the balkan's we have had a case, though no one was hurt. And considering the situation the IDF is operating in, I would expect a lot of cases.

Here is an example:

Why thank you, although it will probably be the last thing I will read on this forum as it has officially, gone down the sh!tter and wedged itself firmly down there with no signs of becoming unclogged.

Granted, that was a bit of a rash, one sided response from me, yeah? Well to be frank, i'm sick of the kind of American ultra-nationalistic attitude that rears its malignant head all to often on these forums nowadays.

It reminds me of an experience I had when I was last in America, sometime last year, and something that has stuck with me ever since.

I was in an airport, boarding a flight back home, and an American guy nudged my shoulder and gestured to a man of Asian/Middle Eastern appearance entering the boarding ramp. He said to me: "Man, don't you feel pretty unsafe when they let these bastards on flights?".

This man showed me a degree of stupidity and ignorance I have come to associate with many of the people who post on this forum. Firstly, labeling an person on sight as a terrorist - a clear sign of stupidity. As for the ignorance? The guy he gestured at wasn't even a Muslim - he was a Sikh.

Anyway, I think i'll stick to looking at the pictures, save myself from wading waist-deep in crap ;) .

Two U.S. police officers killed in prison shooting in Kosovo

Saturday, April 17, 2004

By NEBOJSA MARKOVIC
ASSOCIATED PRESS

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Serbia-Montenegro -- A Jordanian policeman opened fire on a group of international UN police in Kosovo on Saturday, killing two Americans before he was killed when officers returned fire. Ten American officers and an Austrian were wounded.
The shootout erupted when a group correctional officers -- 21 Americans, two Turks and an Austrian -- were leaving the detention center after a day of training. They came under fire from at least one of a group of Jordanians on guard at the prison, said Neeraj Singh, a UN spokesman.

The officers shot back in a gunbattle that lasted about 10 minutes. It was not immediately clear what prompted the Jordanian to shoot.

``As far as we know, there was no communication between the officer who fired and the group of victims,'' Singh said, adding that investigators looking into the incident were questioning four Jordanian officers.

The Jordanian government expressed regret for the incident in a statement and said it also was investigating the shooting, Jordan's official Petra agency reported. The statement identified the Jordanian officer as Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim Ali.

UN and local police officers sealed off the yard of the detention center, took pictures and marked the bullet cartridges with numbers. The body of a police officer, covered with what looked like a dark blue jacket, lay for hours in the yard of the prison compound.

One witness, a 50-year-old woman who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she heard the shooting, ran to her balcony overlooking the prison yard and saw one officer shooting and another hiding.

Another witness who also gave only his age, 31, said he was at a nearby park when he heard the shooting and later heard American officers yelling, ``Drop the gun! Drop the gun!''

``It is absolutely too early to draw any conclusions with regard to what happened there,'' the head of the UN police, Stefan Feller, told Associated Press Television News after visiting the site. He called the shootout a ``terrible incident.''

Milan Ivanovic, a doctor at the hospital in Kosovska Mitrovica, told AP that five American officers and one Austrian officer were being treated. It was not immediately clear where the other wounded were being treated, or what their nationalities were.

``Their wounds are predominantly in the chest and abdomen,'' Ivanovic said. ``They were caused by firearms and possibly explosive devices.''

Kosovska Mitrovica has long been the scene of violence between Serbs and ethnic Albanians, including riots that broke out a month ago, killing 19 and injuring 900.

Ethnic Albanians live on the southern side of the Ibar River in the divided city, and Serbs live in the north. Kosovska Mitrovica is located 25 miles from the provincial capital, Pristina.

Kosovo became a UN protectorate in 1999, after NATO launched a 78-day air war to stop Serb leader Slobodan Milosevic from cracking down on ethnic Albanians seeking independence.

There are some 3,500 UN police officers serving in Kosovo alongside a 6,000-strong local force.

The top UN official in Kosovo, Harri Holkeri, seemed stunned at the shooting incident, which came as the mission is still grappling with last month's violence.

``I am deeply shocked and dismayed at the unfortunate death of dedicated professionals who have come such a great distance to help Kosovo on its road to future,'' he said.

(actually they seem to be a majority.. all the way up to G.W.Bush.......)

And its people like that, that get the **** like that fire fight started (by making people mad..) as you know the thing started from argument, and i think that somebody like "American Patriot" was present there and really pissed the other guys off and made them pull their guns, with sad results....

let`s not forget the role played by France in this little blaming game, the training given to mujaheedin, Syrians, Irakis, Algerians, who are later going to join the great Jihad.
Let`s not forget that it`s the 2eme REP that saved the ass of ArAFAT in Beyriuth in 82. that the Milan is a part of the equipement of Hizballah, Irak insurgents, palestininan insurgents, and god knows who else.
I guess the whole west played it dirty during all this time, and I remember being a kid growing up in France, in the 80`s , taking the mujaheedins as heroes and Saddam Hussein as a friend of human kind as opposed to the blood thirsty Iranians who were sending kids in minefield.
You see, I guess everything is kind of depending on the mood, the PO and tht political weather.
Conclusion, no morality in politics, and the truth is always depending on the interest of the actors to reveal it.

Shadows comment wasnt idiotic IMHO, as people like this "American Patriot" are numerous and very visible on different kinds of forums (the people are from USA......) and that fact gives a impression that there many, many more such people out there in states.....

:(
According to this article they didnt even have contact with each other so how was it started with argument?

Two U.S. police officers killed in prison shooting in Kosovo

Two people are dead, and six hurt in Kosovoska Mitrovica, after a clash between UN police from Muslim countries and UN police from USA.

One US policewoman is reported to be in critical condition,.

More to come.
I bet its the Muslim UN police fault.

If that was the case, then that's the first thing you'd hear about on cnn.

Give it a break, they didnt go to war over a different POV, thats just not even in the realm of reality. They may have made errors on whether the Iraqis had large amounts of WMD but that was only part of the reason for going in and even most all other Gov'ts and democrats agreed that they believed he had them.

For the people who are quick to say " screw islam " or " fxxking arabs " get a life. You need to stop seeing one or ten or 100 thousand people as representative of an entire race or religion. Or even one country as representing an entire region.
A couple of rotten apples spoil the entire barrel ( i think thats what the saying is ) , but only if we choose to let it happen.

PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro -- Four U.N. police officers from Jordan were stripped of their diplomatic immunity Monday to be questioned in a fellow Jordanian's killing of two American guards in Kosovo.

It wasn't clear why Sgt. Maj. Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim Ali opened fire on a convoy of corrections officers on Saturday. He and the two female American guards were killed in the shootout that followed, and 11 people were wounded.

Ali was a member of a highly trained unit in Jordan and had been decorated for warding off an attack on the Israeli Embassy in Amman, a Jordanian official said.

The four other Jordanian police officers at the prison in the town of Kosovska Mitrovica were detained. Authorities lifted their diplomatic immunity, opening the way for them to be interrogated, officials said.

A delegation of Jordanian police officials arrived Monday in Kosovo to assist with the investigation, which is led by an international prosecutor, officials said.

Eight of the 10 Americans were moved to a U.S. military base in Kosovo for treatment, a U.S. military spokesman said Monday. The other two were treated and released, and an Austrian also wounded was flown home Sunday for treatment.

One American officer remained in critical condition following brain surgery in neighboring Macedonia, U.S. peacekeeping spokesman Staff Sgt. Michael Houk said.

The attack shook the United Nations mission in Kosovo, already in turmoil following violent ethnic clashes last month between ethnic Albanians and Serbs that killed 19 and wounded more than 900 in Kosovska Mitrovica.

"The shooting struck a huge blow at the very idea of peacekeeping," said Alex Anderson, the Kosovo project director of the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based organization that monitors the Balkans.

An American police officer serving with the U.N. mission in Kosovo told The Associated Press that the shooting was "clearly an attack against Americans." The officer spoke on condition of anonymity.

Officials denied rumors that a quarrel about the war in Iraq had sparked the gunbattle.

"As far as we know, there was no communication between the officer who fired and the group of victims," said Neeraj Singh, a U.N. spokesman.

The officers were part of the U.N. mission that has administered Kosovo and provided security since June 1999, when Belgrade's authority over the province was removed following a NATO air war that stopped a Serb crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians.

"This is a sad day for United Nations peacekeeping," said Stefan Feller, the head of the U.N. police in Kosovo. "At this stage there can be no conclusions on the reason for the shooting."

The gunbattle began as three U.N. vehicles carrying 21 U.S. correctional officers, two Turkish officers and the Austrian were leaving the prison, which was guarded by five Jordanian special police unit officers, officials said. The correctional officers, who arrived in Kosovo just 10 days ago, had been training at the prison.

Ali, 30, started firing at the convoy, Feller said, and the officers returned fire.

Jordan's government expressed regret for the shootings, a statement carried by the official Jordanian Petra agency said.

The slain Americans were identified as Kim Bigley, 47, of Paducah, Ky., and Lynn Williams, 48, of Elmont, N.Y., said Mike ****erson, spokesman for Computer Sciences Corp. Both worked for Dyncorp, a susidiary of CSC that trains police, corrections and judicial for overseas duty.

I have stayed out of this socalled "discussion" on what might have happend there in that Pristina jail. That is still my intention.

But I have one question to those who have given us their "expert comments": Have any of you ever been close to a person that totally snaps out of it? That has gone from totally calm and normal person to totally insane in just a fraction of a second? And that same person is someone you actually known for years, and that they snapped out of it without any warnings that a normal person could have forseen.

Any of you, after that ever tried to get that person under controle while he's running around with a rifle, screaming and yelling one second, for the next to "delibrity" threathening to kill those who tries to help him?

Just wondering you see...

Perhaps like the Jordanian who opened up on Isreali school girls with an assualt rifle killing 7 if memory serves, eventually overpowered by other Jordians he was just a wacko.... last year the Jordian that killed his Jordanian partners with an assualt rifle (then himself) did have an arguement.

What makes it so hard for you to comprehend? There are evil people and criminals out there who have no regard for others lives. OR is it that you might be wrong and this scenario doesn't fit in with your earlier comments about it being the Americans fault? Perhaps the smartest comments all along were the ones that stated we should all wait until the facts come out.

The shooting took place just after 3 p.m. as the guards were leaving the jail in three cars. Officers close to the investigation said that five Jordanian officers were at the gate when the shooting started but that only one opened fire. The gunfire lasted about 10 minutes, said Joe Napolitano, the commander of a nearby United Nations police station, and local people who witnessed the attack.

Ms. Becker said the prison officers had no contact with the Jordanians before the shooting took place. "It was their first day at the detention center," she said. "They had just completed their induction course and were being shown around the prison for the first time."

Police investigators said they could not comment as to whether the Jordanian officer had deliberately chosen Americans as his target.

Four Jordanians detained in Kosovo over a gunfight between international police on Saturday are now being interrogated as potential suspects.
UN officials have confirmed that the incident began when Jordanian police fired on vehicles carrying US police.
The US officers returned fire and two Americans and one Jordanian were killed and 11 others were wounded.
The Jordanians could not be formally interviewed until the UN waived their right to diplomatic immunity.
UN officials have denied rumours that a quarrel about the war in Iraq sparked the gunfight.
"As far as we know, there was no communication between the officer who fired and the group of victims," AP news agency quoted UN spokesman, Neural Singh, as saying.
The shooting came a day after King Abdullah of Jordan said during a visit to the United States that the war in Iraq had created unprecedented animosity towards Americans across the Middle East.
The UN uses more than 3,000 international police to maintain order between Kosovo's Serbs and Albanians.
But it has confirmed no Serbs or Albanians were involved in the latest shoot-out, which took place in the compound of a prison in Mitrovica.
Special police unit
The incident occurred as the US officers left the detention centre after undergoing initial training. They had only been in Kosovo for 10 days.
The UN says that as they left the compound, at least one member of a Jordanian special police unit opened fire on the US vehicles.
The Americans returned fire. Two female Americans and one male Jordanian died.
UN police commissioner in Kosovo Stefan Feller said that among those killed was a member of the prison's management staff and a member of the special police unit.
Two of the injured are in a serious condition. Four Jordanian officers are being held as witnesses to the incident.
'Drop the gun!'
Doctor Milan Ivanov told the BBC that wounds to the injured were predominantly in the chest and abdomen and "were caused by firearms and possibly explosive devices".
A witness to the incident quoted by the Associated Press news agency said he heard gunshots followed by the cries of American officers yelling, "Drop the gun! Drop the gun!"
The BBC's Nick Hawton in Pristina says the incident could put fresh pressure on the UN, which has also been accused of falling behind in its plan for political reform in the province.
The top UN official in Kosovo, Harry Holier, said he was "deeply shocked and dismayed" over the incident.
The UN took charge of the Serbian province of Kosovo after an 11-week air war, in which Nato forces aimed to push back Serbian troops accused of war crimes against the ethnic Albanians.
The divided town of Mitrovica was the scene of fierce fighting between the two ethnic groups in March
