I was told that he was once a member of the 101st Airborne Division back in the early 1960s.

Born in Seattle, Washington
he followed a medical discharge from the 101st,(from a broken ankle after a parachute jump).

I am a massive Hendrix fan, and he was in the Airbourne divisions, but not sure which unit, and he didn't go to Vietnam due to a spinal injury he picked up during training etc...

A documentary I saw about the great, late legend said he was opposing the Vietnam war, but after serving changed his mind.
