I was thinking about getting some pistol and rifle training this summer. Never shot before (except for a bow during high school). I'm left-handed, but my right eye is dominant--very much so. So should I shoot left-handed or right-handed?

Maybe you should start off with both hands when fireing the pistol, and when using the rifle, the right side.Othervise it would be difficult to see down the sights beacuse your dominant right eye.If you know what i mean?

I write left handed, but shoot right handed.
Just feels much more natural. You should be able to tell when you pick up the pistol or rifle.

You're supposed to shoot with your dominant eye but some people like me can use both

You get used to shooting left or right.
For example, I usually shoot pistols lefthanded, as I'm generally lefthanded (writing etc.).
But the first automatic rifle I shot was a H&K G3 with the cocking lever on the left.
So I always shot it righthanded.
That's why I usually shoot pistols lefthanded and rifles righthanded.
But I could easily switch sides.

I am right handed but when i started using guns many years ago i prefered shooting from left hand since my left eye was dominant...now it doesn't matter for me since i traineb both eyes ,used to shot from left but also it is no problem to shoot from right... anyway it is sometimes hard to operate weapon with left habd especially bolt action rifles and i.e safery/fire selectors (unless you get left handed version) So I would say right hand!!!

Thanks everyone for the insight. I'll probably just learn to shoot right-handed--it sounds like dominant eye is more important than dominant hand. While I do most things left-handed, I play guitar right-handed and I fight right-handed (right leg and body-side back), so I know I can learn to do things right-handed if I try ;)

And Bullpup style rifles is near impossible to fire left-handed since your head more or less comes in the way of the ejection port.

Pick up the gun, aim it, cycle the bolt, change mags. Do whats easiest and comes naturally. Practice shooting left handed and right.

Proper posture, proper breathing, don’t jerk the weapon when you squeeze off a round, controlled bursts, these are all things to take into consideration when firing a weapon among many things.

A semi-auto in each hand, close both eyes and start busting caps...
Works for me.
What?

Shoot with both eyes open in the hand you feel most comfortable with, use proper stance and handling (I'm sure there are many webpages on this topic). I prefer knees bent, feet facing forward and arms straight out with a slight bend to allow for recoil. Works for me, but two eyes open shooting takes time to get used too. But it's great fun. :D

Front Sight post, front sight post, front sight post then trigger control and then breathing in that order. Both eyes open and focus on the FRONT SIGHT POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does it really matter what your technique is when you're firing a M-134 minigun from the hip?

You mean they didn't teach you the TJ Hooker grip(specifically, badguy carhood) at the Cop Shop?

I learned to shoot using .22s and cheap rimfire ammo. The cheap ammo that misfires is a good ball and dummy drill, I could see when I was compensating (pushing my hands foward to compensate the small kick from a .22) and I eventually learned to get the suprise bang and shoot .22s like it was a water gun. Thanks dad!
