WASHINGTON (*******) - U.S. growers produce nearly $35 billion worth of marijuana annually, making the illegal drug the country's largest cash crop, bigger than corn and wheat combined, an advocate of medical marijuana use said in a study released on Monday.

The report, conducted by Jon Gettman, a public policy analyst and former head of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, also concluded that five U.S. states produce more than $1 billion worth of marijuana apiece: California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii and Washington.
California's production alone was about $13.8 billion, according to Gettman, who waged an unsuccessful six-year legal battle to force the government to remove marijuana from a list of drugs deemed to have no medical value.
Tom Riley, a spokesman for the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, said he could not confirm the report's conclusions on the size of the country's marijuana crop. But he said the government estimated overall U.S. illegal drug use at $200 billion annually.
Gettman's figures were based on several government reports between 2002 and 2005 estimating the United States produced more than 10,000 metric tons of marijuana annually.
He calculated the producer price per pound of marijuana at $1,606 based on national survey data showing retail prices of between $2,400 and $3,000 between 2001 and 2005.
The total value of 10,000 metric tons of marijuana at $1,606 per pound would be $35.8 billion.
By comparison, the United States produced an average of nearly $23.3 billion worth of corn annually from 2003 to 2005, $17.6 billion worth of soybeans, $12.2 billion worth of hay, nearly $11.1 billion worth of vegetables and $7.4 billion worth of wheat, the report said.
Gettman said the 10-fold increase in U.S. marijuana production, from 1,000 metric tons in 1981 to 10,000 metric tons in 2006, showed the country was failing to control marijuana by making its cultivation and use illegal.
"Marijuana has become a pervasive and ineradicable part of the economy of the United States," he said. "The contribution of this market to the nation's gross domestic product is overlooked in the debate over effective control."
"Like all profitable agricultural crops marijuana adds resources and value to the economy," he added. "The focus of public policy should be how to effectively control this market through regulation and taxation in order to achieve immediate and realistic goals, such as reducing teenage access."
Riley said illegal drug use was a "serious part of the economy," but he rejected the notion of an economic argument for legalizing marijuana.
He said marijuana use was an "inherently harmful activity" with serious physical and mental health consequences. He said more American teens were in treatment centers for marijuana dependency than for all other drugs combined.

From my therapeutic practise... there is growing demand for this stuff and i believe that until the end of century most western governments legalize marijuana as a tool to prevent damages... (mostly dangerous behavior like driving or using other tools)

This is true.

Alcohol causes far more death, illness and accidents than pot.

Ad tobacco to this list and its even worse.

Where is Aerosoul to skool us on the grass tip?

The figure is somewhat lower in the article than in reality. I have been told, mind you, that single pounds are being bought in LA and San Fran by the medical Pot clubs at 4000~5500$ from growers. Inreturn, the clubs sell them to their patients at 60~80$ a 1/8oz. Shame, thats alot of lost taxes.:|

I would add few more billion to their estimate.

Really???

I need to go down to LA and San Fran and start a business.

Then again, you can't beat medical meds thou. At one point, I got my hands on some of the government grown meds, and, well, as far as I was told, I sat in that padded chair 14 hours, pounded away at 70 dollars worth of chips, drank gallons upon gallons of water, and soda, and only got up when I had to take a piss.

We call that "blasting.."

rofl Good luck. You will be able to afford that Ferarri in a few months. Them heaps of money will also able you to afford a expensive lawyer when the Feds do get wind of you, and they will because you will be out in the open doing it all legal and business like for the state and local LEOS to leave you alone. The Feds dont give 2 ****s about what the people of California legalized, they will get you sooner or later.

Oh no, quality matters. Top quality meds can go for 1,100 dollars per pound in Ohio (for me). Anything above meds will go for more.

I don't know what's about marijuana but in my country from 1 dose of pure amphetamine (which exist only in production and shipment phase) are made from 2 to 4 doses in retail market... I guess is similar. There are plenty of garbage in this stuff.

Booze, been around since the Egyptians and possibly before. Booze has been in our culture way too long to be ever removed. Pot has a legacy but it hasn't been estabished as booze.

Relegalize marijuana, and tax it.

Back in the day, seemed a few parents smoked it, some kids, maybe a small percentage of the population (mid-late '80's)...but now?

Holy crap, dope is EVERYWHERE. Go to a concert, walk down the beach, walk to your car through a movie parking lot...and all these "adults" who are secret smokers...jeebus. Go to an office party, or any kind of gathering of the mid 30-mid 40 crowd, and guaranteed someone is going to pull out a J and it's going to make the rounds.

Ticks me off, I have to go outside to avoid the smoke, only because thats such a stupid way to lose a job, second hand smoke and piss hot, no thanks.

Honestly, what with the jails full of small time offenders, the millions that smoke, the medical use and sheer galactic TAXES that the gov. could collect and use...it boggles my mind that it hasn't happened yet.

Nah, its worth more illegal than it is legal, just some potheads don't tell you that because they don't care about that, they're too worried about getting popped so they put legalize it lever on high and punch the gas.

Read my post from a couple of days ago about this very same subject but on a different thread.

I think my suggestion would quell everyones thirst.
