Gents in MOLLE gear are from different walks of life - I wasn't bothering anybody with their bio's; all I know is that everybody whom was there was doing it for a good reason :)
The place is in SoCal and weapons are a good reminder of "Snooze, you Lose" when it comes to hyper sensitive legislators getting elected and how one should stock ahead. EuroWussy exchange is always in consideration - PM your arrival time.

I can only say that it was an easy rifle to use. Had a smooth trigger and was well balanced. Point and Shoot! I spent most of my time with the AUG
The best part of my day was when Mr.Lee showed his "distaste" of my firing stance by yanking on my elbow and saying "your such a fag" :)

No black eye I love those sunglasses I would never risk them :) PLus I think I was just checking out the sights in the photo not really shooting
He had me practice turning and firing double taps into two targets about 7 meters distant two meters apart and I round the rifle easy to control. Stuka emptied an perhaps a whole mag missing only 3 or 4 times at 50 meters while shooting at a fairly rapid pace. Great rifle!

Exactly, my Wife went to Disney with the in-law and youngster just recently, and she's gone on a few other trips across country, which if I ever need to I remind her of.
I even went to her family Christmas party this last weekend, even though my old man flew in with my youngest brother Saturday, so I know I'm good for the next few months;)
Unless Durandal posts in this thread, I'll have a word in the meantime and see if we could maybe get a Springtime shoot going?

Mini-14 drawbacks that became rather obvious is the inability to tactical reload - the full mag just doesn't want to rock in on a closed bolt... There is really no way around it without modifying the bottom of the bolt with a dremel - not something I would want to get into.
Indiana Jones
12-19-2006, 01:32 PM
The last mod left to do is installation of a weaver rail on the bottom to accept a vertical grip - the stock is very thin profile to comfortably hold as a rifle and oprod doesn't get very friendly with the support hand's fingers.

I still have the original stock in place and it is mighty short for the average built shooter. Also, with the thin barrel, the gun does not lend itself to prolonged series. After 3 or 4 Mags in quick succession it gets mighty hot...speaking of which, the factory 20/30 rounders have become increasingly scarce on this side of the pond. I mostly use the Ramlines, and in the beginning you had to really rip them from the magwell. The accuracy potential of course also leaves a lot to be desired.
Imo, it does have its distinct strong points however. Not very care intensive, overall ergonomics are good...fairly solid utility gun, but certainly overpriced.

My Mini has its barrel chopped and a Smith's 5.56 muzzle brake installed - that seems to stabilize the barrel whip quite well... Stock was bedded, gas system re-torgued, Wolff Xtra power recoil spring and a bigger bushing installed - brass now lands 4-5 feet ahead of the shooter instead of neighboring shooters' heads 20 feet over. Even with my thick Tritium front post I can group my misses in a good 3-4" circle at 100 yards (I've been having slight retardation every time I come out to zero the rifle) - not bad for unsupported position. Ultimak rail also lends to accuracy and transferring heat. I've set out to finally zero those sluggish sights in and get a final reading on its accuracy.
2005-06 Mini's suppose to be better - Ruger changed something about the barrel making process which inherently made Mini's inaccurate. The Guaranteed groups have shrunk from 5" down to 2 or 3" out of the box, which would make them even better shooters with a little TLC... They are great do-it-yourself project guns and accessorize rather well.
It's loud, it runs dirty and it hardly ever jams - it cost me more than an AR by a long shot once it was said and done, but it can take about any ghetto mod and still be a Mini :D With that said, factory condition Mini is a crime against firearm community.

You guys look like you had fun.
Are all those gents with the MOLLE gear on LEO's or Military
I have Sheriff, Police, DA, Marshall, FBI, Marine, Army and Firearm ind. personnel that shoot with me. We also have electricians, lawyers, doctors and just normal people that want to have fun and work on skill sets. we get together to work on the skills we learned from various classes we attend thought out the country from instructors such as Pat Rogers, Ben Lennet, Larry Vickers, Jeff Gonzales, Scott Reitz, and many others.
Kind of like the airsoft guys.. we get geared up and play, but we use the real thing and we only shoot at targets.. :)
That range reminds me of one I went to during an ITTS class, looks familar, but it could just be the lack of sleep.
It is not the Angeles range, but we do shoot at a local So Cal range that we have full access to.
I'm not familiar with SMGlee's Classes/Training what does it consist of and can anyone attend.????
Usually we don't just let anyone attend. everyone was invited. we don't want any undesirables to shoot with us and next thing we know we are on the 6 o’clock news being raided. All of the shooters there are known to some one that is there. Everyone has to show that they have no criminal backgrounds; all weapons are legally registered and possessed. all local law are observed and obeyed.

There was a time when I was looking for .223 alternative since we can't have AR's and I did look into Mini 14's. The biggest drawback I kept hearing is how inaccurate it was once it heats up + magazine limited capacity.
I'm still interested in Mini 30 (all weather), I just love the .30 caliber in that compact design. I might get it soon. I also like those 10 round clear plastic mags for it.
I found Kel Tec SU 16A, it was very light and quite comfortable to hold, Without thinking 2 much I bought it for $490. The gun is quite accurate and will shoot 1.5" at 100 yd if you do you're part and put a scope or "B" sight on it since plastic original ones are somewhat crude.
The rifle accepts AR 15/M 16 mags which is a +, it does not get as dirty as AR since it has gas chamber/piston of AK design but rotating bolt of AR so it's pretty much the best of both worlds.
The new CA model has metal sight and 16" barrel, it's one nice gun. I would buy it in a heartbeat if I did not own A model.
About front pistol grip? Is it legal in CA if you're gun accepts detachable mags? I've heard different things. Currently I use Springfield XD mag loader as my front grip, it slides on the rail and actually works quite well.
My SU16, I just need to get front grip (if it's legal) and it's pretty much done.

If that's true then Mini 30 will be mine soon....... I also heard that their receivers are cast made rather than machined and it could fracture under some stress.

We have a Büchsenmacher here who will bring the gun sub-MOA for about 300 €´s, at least if you use bullets from 62grs. upwards. I put a weaver-rail+ aimpoint on mine, and it shoots roughly 70 mm´s at 100 meters, supported from the bench with 55 grs. Sellier&Bellot FMJ´s. The only long gun in my arsenal whose potential I can easily surpass. I never quite felt the need for a muzzle brake. I learned shooting with large-bore bolt actions when I was a kid, I guess that somewhat de-sensitized me when it comes to muzzle flip/recoil. Compared to an AR-derivative it does indeed climb significantly more, though.
With that said, factory condition Mini is a crime against firearm community.
Let´s just say its "special". ;) I normally somewhat resent guns that inaccurate, but in case of the mini, I feel oddly drawn to it.

I was thinking, Those excellent photos could have captions underneath them, the humorous type. Looks like some great instructions.
Over the years there have been some good progression in developing better shooting styles. Make what I was taught almost seem like Napoleonic. At least we were not issued Buck N Ball.

I'm not a lawyer nor play one on TV, but:
1) Semi-automatic, Centerfire Rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any of the following:
A) Pistol Grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon
B) A Thumbhole stock
C) A folding or telescoping stock
D) A Grenade or flair launcher
E) A Flash suppressor
F) A Forward Pistol grip
2) Blah Blah more than 10 round capacity
3) Blah blah overall length of 30 inches.
I've seen people with forward grips on the SU-16's on local ranges, but for all I know they could be "manufacturing" AW's thanks to vague DOJ wording... I guess the safe bet is to say "No" to the Forward Grip since even without constructive possession law a "mishap" in the evidence room could find your Forward Grip on a light rail of about any modern handgun, making a completely legit and legally purchased firearm into an evil AW... By the same standard, god forbid you have an adjustable wrench in your home as it will most certainly act as a forward grip on about any handgun or a rifle
So someone will concentrate on forward PISTOL grip, then some will see FORWARD pistol GRIP... For all I know, general consensus is that it's a no-no :( I guess I'm only mounting the lower rail on the Mini then - I've edited my original statement to avoid any unwanted attention.

I think myself and SMGLee should show up at the bar while you are away, show your picture and as if "You've seen this man?"... I'm out for Christmas but coming back for the New Year's - I've volunteered to take a bunch of gun virgins to shoot at the Angeles Range on the 29th... Part of my Community Service...
Early next year sounds good - we should also begin making plans for another trip to Roman's

Thanks for that info, Someday if I get the chance I would very much like to attend. I totally understand what you talking about with regard to persons on the range and all....Cheers.:)
P.S. I love that airsoft bit.

forgot to ask, now that I know it's not the Angeles range; is it a public or private range?
Last time I was showing my bud how to shoot at the local public range, we drew a crowd, which was not desirable.
Regardless looks like you all had a lot of fun and I wish I was able to join you guys.

Details of the range overhead cover and pictures of the facility not part of the actual range. I collect stuff so I mull over what others have done and pick the best ideas out of the lot.
Hoping to break ground in 2009.
