Russian troops storm cornered Chechen rebels
NAZRAN, Russia, April 17 (*******) - Russian troops on Saturday stormed a house which they said contained a prominent Chechen rebel who had taken at least two policemen hostage, witnesses said.
They said around 500 troops had sealed off a whole section of Ordzhonikidzevskaya, a mainly ethnic Chechen village just over the border from Chechnya in the region of Ingushetia.
Police said two rebels were holed up in the house.
Around 40 troops carried in by helicopter swooped down on the house after nightfall, sparking heavy gunfire which then tailed off. It was not clear what had happened to the two rebels or their hostages.
Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for the Russian military in the Caucasus, said that among the trapped guerrillas was one who was "especially interesting for the law enforcement agencies." But he did not specify who it might be.
Russia has been fighting separatists in the southerly region of Chechnya for a decade and, although it says it is restoring control, loses policemen and soldiers daily.
In the last few weeks it has intensified a hunt for rebel leaders Aslan Maskhadov and Shamil Basayev, trying to capture them before foliage returns to Chechnya's forests after the winter and gives the rebels more cover.
In recent months, fighting has spilled over into Ingushetia, which is inhabited by a people closely related to the Chechens by ethnicity and their Muslim religion.
On April 6 the president of Ingushetia, Murat Zyazikov, narrowly escaped death when a suicide bomber exploded a car bomb as his motorcade passed by.
