Came as a complete surprise to me.

But good news, that man was a loony.

Of course America would probably capitalise on the oppurtunity, or perhaps an Islamist movement might gain support if the government goes on to collapse.

I always thought of him as being more of an eccentric, idiosyncratic, dictator, rather than a tyrant like Pol Pot or Saddam, I think that words weird and amusing describe him better than the word brutal, he is an interesting person, to say the least, and despite his type of leadership, seems to be well liked among his people, or so the BBC report I heard said, anyway, I hope that after him, Turkmenistan recieves a better quality of leadership, if not a democracy.

He killed thousands indirectly with stuff like denying that certain diseases like tuberculosis and HIV exist in Turkmenistan (which means that the thounsads of people who have them can't get any treatment or even diagnosis for them), cutting healthcare dramatically so that the only remaining hospital is in the capital, stopping to pay goverment pensions to the elderly who starve to death and jailing the opposition and anyone he doesn't like in inhumane conditions. Plus he was totally insane and an idiot.
I think I can say without guilt that I'm glad he's dead.

I remember he named a month after his mother, and then closed all hospitals and libraries in all areas except the capital..

Some prick he was :)

It's more than a bit misleading to try and portray life there as a magical care-free utopia. Commodities and services being extremely cheap doesn't help much in any case when you are in grinding poverty and making $25 a month.
