yep. actually, The Philippines' counter terrorist force, SAF (special action force) is the only one that uses this bdu.
however it has been replaced by those BDU's in use in those pics i posted.

The vehicle camo actually works quite well. The uniforms are mainly to distinguish PSG personnel from other units, and yes, it reminds the other guys who they're dealing with. ;)

If you check closely other armed forces units of the Philippines, be it Marines, Army, Navy or Police paramilitaries, they deliberately wear their webbings this way. I think I heard that the reason was that they can hug the ground more with this out of the way. Either way, I find it lousy. But, at the main gates or parade grounds etc., they were them properly.

Pinoy are a short folk... tall ones are hard to find
Many of the APF are issued full length M16s anyway(or other rifle issued to them)... at least my unlce who is SAF in Leyte was issued a full length rifle... sometimes though I've seen him with a Patriot
... come to think of it... that M16 isnt really long enough to be unwieldly

What about the other camouflage schemes implemented by the PNP and the AFP...
I've seen green and violet versions of the choco-chip pattern as well as the standard Army/Marines camo scheme(dont know its designation)
Is there a set uniform for PNP forces aside from the military?

not exactly violet but dark blue like woodland bdu was used by phil contingent sent in iraq as part of the peacekeeping forces. the green choco-chip camo was now replaced by the digital pattern which is now in circulation within the SAF.
different camo usually represents different units.

You'ld be surprised to hear that they even prefer the M14 rifles than the M16's. That's why in every platoon or so, there'd be at leat a minimum of 3-4 carrying the M14. Mostly designated marksmen/snipers. Surprisingly most have no scopes or have the improvised grips and shoulder stock cut off.
This configuration surprised many Americans in the Balikatan excercise.
Vietnamese are even smaller guys carrying AK47's which to the best of my knowledge are unweildy at times having harder recoil than the centered M16.
Remember the Japanese WW2 Asikara rifles?

Quite true.
My cousin who was previously stationed in Samar (Camp Lukban) was an Army 2Lt assigned to the camp hospital (He was a nurse by profession) preferred to carry an M14 in that configuration during times when they had to go into the hot zone to extract the wounded.
There was one hairy indicent he tells me when their position was about to be overrun by the NPA from both sides. Rebel M16s were going full automatic and got them pinned down. He quickly unloaded half a mag of 7.62 automatic fire and the M16s from the NPA quickly fell silent. He said you could almost smell the fear from the rebels when they heard the M14.
That woke up the rest of his Army buddies and unloaded a barrage of M16 full auto fire until they could regain composure and drive back the rebels.

Well, I wear my webbing round round the waist and I can still hug the ground, and I've got a damn sight more than an ammo pouch and a waterbottle on it...just slack drills really.

I wouldn't really know why they wear it that way. But I don't see that a whole lot. Maybe the guy just came out of the crapper. Maybe the one I captioned "patrolling the slums?" weren't really patrolling. Maybe they were coming back from lunch somewhere. Maybe it's a secured area. I don't know. I don't think it's good or fair to compare one with the other. But I sure can bet you those guys see more action from 4 insugencies and criminal activities than a regular European paintball army. With an average 15 deaths a month from combat engagements. They've got their hands full covering the whole archipelago. And as my friend (RIP) told me, they still refuse to wear vests. Hence the lack of it as you can see in most images posted. Reasons, well they're too heavy or too hot. They carry ammo, socks and water. Minimal food rations preferring to live of the land. Bugs and snakes. No Snickers or power bars. During COCC for ROTC in Marikina. We weren't given a barracks but told to sleep anywhere we could find. Toilet was a hole you dig in the ground.
I wouldn't bother them too much about what they wear. Specially with our less than pristine human rights record.

Well, I'm just saying how I see it. Godspeed to your late friend, it sounds like they have a tough fight on their hands. Still, nobody in my 'paintball' army would ever carry a weapon like that. Number one reason being the immediate threat of a bollocking, but more importantly if you behave like that in 'safer' areas (there are no safe areas) then your drills will suffer in the field. Without meaning to be-little the deaths of your servicemen, any one of those 'civvies' on the street could open up on that group and I guarantee that not one of those blokes could return fire in less than 5 seconds, by which time one or more of them may be dead or injured. If I were the enemy, and I had that group in my GPMG sight picture, I'd think it was christmas (or Eid/rammadan).
But what can you tell from a picture?
Seconded on the body armour in the jungle viewpoint though. Way too hot to patrol with. Also, engagements will be very short range. Not sure if I would want to be on a lengthy patrol with just bugs and snakes for food though. I'd at least take some rice for carbs.
I wouldn't bother them too much about what they wear. Specially with our less than pristine human rights record.
I think the guys my 'paintball' army are facing have a slightly worse track record on human rights! p-)
(odds of surviving taliban capture is around 3% I think)

I wouldn't really know why they wear it that way. But I don't see that a whole lot....
Seen it quite commonly back when I was a kid during the great offensive against the rebels on the mountains of Negros. First time I saw an M-203 up close I thought my eyes would pop out of my sockets.
Our soccer field was turned into a landing strip for the Hueys as they came in pairs unloading troops. Regular soldiers here tend to carry their Vietnam-era M-16 that way in secure areas. Sort of like resting their arms. And it helped that their rifles had very long slings, too.
