Two British soldiers hurt in Iraq

LONDON (*******) - Two British soldiers have been injured after their convoy was ambushed in southeast Iraq, the Ministry of Defence says.

The men were shot during an attack on a joint British Army and Iraqi Civil Defense Corps convoy late on Saturday near the town of Amara.

"Their injuries are not life-threatening," an MoD spokesman said on Sunday. He denied media reports that "fierce fighting" was raging around the town.

The soldiers' personal details and regiments will not be released.

Britain has the second biggest military force in Iraq after the United States. There are around 10,000 British troops in Iraq, most around the southern city of Basra.

Six British soldiers were killed and eight injured last June in two separate incidents near Amara after what the British army called a "misunderstanding" with locals over weapons searches.

Update from BBC News

Two British soldiers have suffered gunshot injuries during fighting in the Iraqi town of Al Almarah.
The men are serving with the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, which is based in Canterbury, Kent, attached to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Both suffered gunshot wounds, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening - they will not be named until relatives have been informed.

The Army said the fighting broke out at about 2000 GMT on Saturday.

A spokesman said it was not known who carried out the attack on the soldiers who were travelling with the Iraqi Civil Defence Corps, north-west of Basra.

The men were reported to be from the Territorial Army, but the Ministry of Defence was unable to confirm this.

Both soldiers are being treated at a military hospital and will be flown home on Monday.

Grenade attack

Last week, the commanding officer of the Argylls was flown back to the UK for emergency surgery after a vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade which failed to detonate.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Gray, who suffered serious injuries, had been travelling with another soldier from the Argylls at the time of the attack.

Continuing incidents against both coalition forces and civilians have led to warnings of increased violence in the run-up to the planned handover of power on 30 June.

A pilot project by the UK to send failed Iraqi asylum seekers home has been suspended amid concerns over continued fighting.
