Isn't there a Russian equivalent to this? By the way the name of the place is not Area 51. It covers the same place on old maps that were used to test nukes. The official name is AFFTC ( Air Force Flight Test Center ) Detachment 3.

Cool thing, nice find.
We can see there some white transport aircraft. Someone know what type of it, are parked 3 of them(on a square)?

read the wikipedia entry on area 51: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_51

The transport planes are also commuter planes that fly from las vegas to the airbase everyday taking the people that work there. The flight has no number and has its people board from a special area in the las vegas airport.

One Beechcraft C-12 and two B1900.

The large jet is one of the dozen or so B737-200 from Janet. Janet is a DoD company that daily flies contractors to various military sites in AZ, CA and other places in continental US. Nothing "secret" -they park openely in a remote terminal at Las Vegas / McCarran airport but not the "average" airline.

This is THE site if you want facts -and not phantasy- about the so called "Area 51"

Interesting area there. Head west a bit and you will see a big number off leftovers from nuke explosions. It's called Tanopah test site I think, but I'm not sure.

Some craters have a diameter of 300 or more meters.

I had a look on several Airforce Bases all over the US, they removed all SR-71's and the B2 from the imagery. I think the U2 is gone, too. Or have a look at Norfolk.

For what are these white fields there?

You won't be able to see "prototype fighter jets" there. You only see what they want you to.

Exactly--if you think they will be "caught with their pants down" by a satellite, think again. They know exactly when they come over the horizon.

I think google will distort or cover parts of images up if asked, there are a couple of european military bases who imagery on google map are completely distorted.

theyre tents put up for when the catapult system is being installed/repaired so satellites cant look down and possibly see how theyre made and whatnot

Yeah, you can just search "Area 51" in the Google Earth locator and it'll take you straight to the base

Check out all the little dirt roads along the base and there's tons of checkpoint buildings

There's also a surplus of Blackhawks parked throughout the establishment

Steam catapults are not secret, i.e. the French Navy bought and uses US made components for the "Charles De Gaulle" CVN catapults. The tarps are here to protect the hardware and the men from the harsh weather conditions during heavy maintenance, nothing more.

BTW SR-71s are long gone from active duty with the USAF (and I think from the NASA too). If you see SR-71, they are on poles!

not much use for spy planes today when you own super high resolution spy satellites.

i am willing to bet that anything really interesting has long since been moved from the Groom lake facility, just general research now. the old trick of keeping everyone focused on this one base here and they won't see all the stuff over there.

of crouse I could also be talking out my ass too.

They're actually Pave Hawks. You can see the shadows of the refueling probes.

I think the U2 is gone, too.

Look for Beale AFB in California. There are a couple of TR-1s visible there. One is actually caught on takeoff.

ya i think that facility is operating at a considerable lower level that it once was

if you google earth it and look at its "new" big runway that extends into the lake you can see that 2/3 of it is closed so obivously nothing exciting is happening there anymore

if you look around the surrounding area of the base, you can find some interesting land markings, theres like a huge X if you pan up left from the base

The "big" runway never was actually bigger, it was about the same length. In the late 1990s the old taxiway was extended and turned into a runway, that's what you are talking about. At various times of the year different sections are usable because of flooding, etc. That was part of the reason for switching to the "new" runway - the old runway was not able to maintain a high sortie rate because of flooding during the winter, when nights are longest (and thus they do the most flying).

By no means has DET 3 shut down, if anything operations there have been expanded. There are more people, and there is more fuel, than ever before on weekdays. There are a number of programs running out of there now, though a good percentage are avionics related - not as obvious and sexy as A SEKRET PLANE! but just as important.

You can bet B-2, F-117, F-22, F-35, and F-18E hardware is tested out there all the time, not to mention MiG-29s and other people's hardware. Every time a B-2, F-117, or other LO test aircraft gets major maint. it overflies DET 3 to have it's in-flight signature measured by the DYCOMS array. DET 3 is more important than ever as the number of LO aircraft and missiles in the inventory increases.

And yes, they still have SEKRET PLANES!
