Following Future Marine's post, I'm wondering if music has ever evoked strong enough emotions to get you choked up. For me its a lot easier to get emotional oevr great powerful music than a movie, and usually when I get choke up in a movie its due to a blend of the imagery and the soundtrack.

My list:

A lot of Hans Zimmer stuff, (esp The Thin Red Line - Journey to the Line)

Dust in the Wind- Kansas

Fiddler on the Green - Demons and Wizards (this song just strikes a nerve in me, most sorrow filled song ever)

Well, I was sorta touched by "Never Again" by Remedy.
I thought the lyrics were pretty tight.

The theme from BHD, when you see the coffins on the transport, going home. By Hans Zimmer, not sure of the title though. The theme from "The Last of The Mohicans", not really a choker, just stormingly good. Surprisingly, from the LOTR, in the first film, when Gandalf falls into that big hole the music there is quite emotional.

Real life: "A Life on the Ocean Wave", (watching The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines play it is brilliant). Very proud piece of music, my father was a Royal Marine Commando, and it stirs all sorts of proud and patriotic feelings :) The Last Post played on Rememberance Sunday is very sobering.

Lemon Tree by Fool's Garden. Not because of the song itself but because of what it's connected to for me.

The Dance by Garth Brooks is sad.

Remember When by Alan Jackson is pretty emotional, it was played at a funeral I recently attended. :|

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Field Work

Brush up on my field work
Better brush up on my field work
Gonna get my fingers dirty
Better brush up on my field work

One thing I need
Is to understand this jungle
Before I can untangle
The part of me that's fungoid

Was a hundred and three
When the world was still a baby
But instinct's an equation
You could program in an android

Brush up on my field work
Better brush up on my field work
Gonna get my fingers dirty
Gonna brush up on my field work

Somewhere inside
There's a place where we can travel
A code we could unscramble
A riddle to unravel

Brush up on my field work
Gonna brush up on my field work
Gonna get my fingers dirty
Gonna brush up on my field work

Somewhere inside me
Are the caves of Iwo Jima
And the sands of Arizona
Better brush up on my field work

Hans Zimmer especially, the Gladiator Theme is also good. There are alot more, even some eighties songs that get to me when listened at the right moment.

There was a decorated General with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told
Of past battles won and lost and legends of old
A seasoned veteran in his own time
On the battlefield he gained respect for fame
With many metals of bravery and stripes to his name
He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face
And always urged his men on
But on the eve of great battle with the infantry and dream
The old general tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning
He awoke from that night to tell what he had seen
And walked slowly out of his tent
All the men held tall with their chests in the air
With the courage in their blood and a fire in their stare
And it was a gray morning and they all wondered how they would fair
Till the old general told them to go home

Chorus:
He said,
I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting
And I’ve have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I’m going
So, take your shower, shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Take your shower, shine your shoes
Well, you got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven

But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders
Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders
The general said he would do his own duty
But he would extend it no further
The men could go as they pleased
But not a man moved their eyes gazed straight ahead
Till one by one they stepped back and not a word was said
And the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head
He then prepared to fight

Chorus
He said,
I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting
And I’ve have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I’m going
So, take your shower, shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Take your shower, shine your shoes
Well, you got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven

Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven….

I cannot help but get a lump in my throat whenever the Last Post is performed by a bugle-player at the close of Remembrance Ceremonies.

The thoughts and memories come washing back, especially if I smell boot polish and brasso.

If napalm is the smell of victory, to me, Last Post is the sound of...Ultimate Sacrifice. :|

Music has a way of transporting one back to another place and time. Songs that choke me up are ones that bring back really strong memories. Songs that meant something to John and me, and songs that were played at funerals of people I loved are the ones that most often choke me up.

on a related note.... one time I saw the Marine Corp Band perform... and at the end of the performance they played the battle songs from all the wars... and the Vets in the audience were to stand up when "their" songs were played. I was bawling like a baby by the time it was over, and then they finished with all Vets standing and they played the Star Spangled Banner. It was beautiful, and I was so thankful to be a part of it, even as a spectator.

I've got to agree with Farmgirl, there are two songs in particular which were played at the funeral of the younger brother of one of my best friends, the thing is I loved both of those songs before and although I still do, they don't sound the same anymore. ANyway, they're "You do something to me" by Paul Weller and "Once around the block" by Badly Drawn Boy.

There is another song that just leaves me feeling sad but only if I see it with it's video and that's the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt". Just watching his life unfold in the video and you could tell he knew he was nearing the end. I'm not even a Johnny Cash fan but that song and video are masterpieces.

'Amazing Grace", "On Eagles Wings" and a trumpeted "Taps" get me choked up.

Also the music, together with the film from Saving Private Ryan had me past choked up. That movie did such a good job of depicting the evens within, depicting the struggle, the courage and the honor of those brave men. My grandfather landed on that very beach, he waded through those very waters. He was fired on by those same heavy cannons, so it really had meaning to me, watching that after listening to him tell stories of D-Day.
