Many Jews in ghettos across eastern Europe tried to organize resistance against the Germans and to arm themselves with smuggled and homemade weapons. Between 1941 and 1943, underground resistance movements formed in about 100 Jewish groups. The most famous attempt by Jews to resist the Germans in armed fighting occurred in the Warsaw ghetto.

In the summer of 1942, about 300,000 Jews were deported from Warsaw to Treblinka. When reports of mass murder in the killing center leaked back to the Warsaw ghetto, a surviving group of mostly young people formed an organization called the Z.O.B. (for the Polish name, Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa, which means Jewish Fighting Organization). The Z.O.B., led by 23-year-old Mordecai Anielewicz, issued a proclamation calling for the Jewish people to resist going to the railroad cars. In January 1943, Warsaw ghetto fighters fired upon German troops as they tried to round up another group of ghetto inhabitants for deportation. Fighters used a small supply of weapons that had been smuggled into the ghetto. After a few days, the troops retreated. This small victory inspired the ghetto fighters to prepare for future resistance.

On April 19, 1943, the Warsaw ghetto uprising began after German troops and police entered the ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants. Seven hundred and fifty fighters fought the heavily armed and well-trained Germans. The ghetto fighters were able to hold out for nearly a month, but on May 16, 1943, the revolt ended. The Germans had slowly crushed the resistance. Of the more than 56,000 Jews captured, about 7,000 were shot, and the remainder were deported to killing centers or concentration camps.

In Israel there is a Kibbutz which among its founders were fighters who took part in the uprising and survived, it's called Kibbutz Lohamei Hagetaot which means The Ghetto Fighters' kibbutz in Hebrew.

AFAIK only 9 of them survived (including Marek Edelman-who was a cardiologist in poland post war...)

The little boy with his hands raised is/was Tzvi Nussbaum. He survived the war, went to Palestine/Israel and later practiced medicine in New York.

6 million of us got slaughtered and were going to let it happen again

What happened to Ariel Sharon, our Lion of Judah? He has not brought the Nation of Israel either Peace OR Security. Arafat and the other murderers of Jews are still at large and now our prime minister is threatening to remove brave Jews from the heart of the heart of the Jewish Homeland.

Sorry Born.

Right move, wrong time. We should have done it when Rabin was talking about it. Hell Shamir even talked about it in the 80s.

which ghetto uprising?? there was 2.. 1 by the jews and 1 by the underground resistance.. the 1 by the jews.. they had no weapons.. the underground gave them 1 revolver... so basically the jewish uprising never really happened but the one by the underground was a major success which pended on the russian advance to help relieve pressure and drive most of the germans away from the warsaw ghetto.. but instead the russians halted and the underground got slaughtered.. some say the russians deliberatly halted and didnt help..

This is not accurate. If nothing else, look above and see the "armed Jews of Warsaw" pictures. I count a heck of a lot more than one revolver.

I think it's also important to point out that the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising wasn't the only uprising carried out by Jews at the time of the Shoah.

August 1943- Bialystok Ghetto Uprising

October 14, 1943- Sobibor Uprising

October 7, 1944- Auschwitz-Birkenau Uprising

1942- Kruszyna Uprising

1943- Minsk-Mazowiecki Uprising, Janowska Uprising

Flakkey-plish history is very difficult ;) First of all-we havent 2 ghettos uprising in Warsaw. We have only one ghetto uprising in Warsaw(S'13 make thread about that here ;) ).The second uprising what you talk about(im guess) was year after ghetto uprising(in 1944).And yeah, Russian dont helped :( Because uncle Joe(Stalin) dont liked polish resistance-Armia Krajowa-Home Army :| . @S'13-yeah Jew wasnt pussys at WW II ;)They have honour, and they dont want to die like animals :| Like Marek Edelman said, they want to die like man, in fight :|

1. There were 2 uprisings one by Jews in 1943 second one by polish underground in 1944

2.Belive me it was more than 1 revolver...
Overal plan was that when uprising would start then polish soldiers would blow off ghetto wall and help to escepe jews who made it through.

Delivered:
just prior to uprising:
1 MG
2 SMG
50 pistols & revolvers
10 rifles
600 grenades
30 KG plastic explosives
120 KG other explosives
400 detonators
30KG potasium to prepare molotov coctails
large amout of saltpeper to create explosives
aditional instructions how to create bombs grenades fortifications molotow coctails etc.

Lot more was delivered or sold (yes we sold since we were short of guns and ammo and best way was to buy from germans who sometimes sold their gear) prior to this.
(Remember that ghetto was behind wall and area was under constant survivalence so all delivery was by severs or smuggled in.

Aditionaly on first day of uprising polish EOD tried to destroy walls but 2 wear KIA and 4 Heavily wounded so commander decided to retreat when german reinforcments arrived (couple of germans were killed)

Next day 2 germans were killed near the ghetto wals but again german reinforcements prevented further action

Next day german unit heading to ghetto was attacked and defeated

Next day 4 germans and policeman were killed near ghetto gate but heavy fire forced polish soldiers to retreat

23 April Kpt iwański with his men created tunnel under one of the strets and delivered somme ammo and food to ghetto seeing exchausted Jewish fighters decided to stay and replace them on positions to give them some rest Kpt. Iwanski 2 sons and his brothers died while fighting in ghetto he was heavily wounded and evacuated by tunel out of ghetto among with his mens and 34 Jewish soldiers who one year later participated in Warsaw Uprising as a Jewish platoon of Home army. And there were many more examples of polish help to Jews.
29 April 70 jews are evacuated by tunels and then escorted in trucks to forests near warsaw

One year after ghetto fall when uprising started in Warsaw polish scouts discovered that group of jews is still alive in ghetto area (which was sealed zone after uprising) those jews were used by germans to clean remains of ghetto... 358 of them were liberated and joined Warsaw Uprising (1944) most of them died during fight just like their liberators... but some survived

Thats are only few examples...

Even german commander Jurgen Stroop wrote that his forces were under constant fire from the areas surrounding ghetto...

I think it's also important to point out that the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising wasn't the only uprising carried out by Jews at the time of the Shoah.

August 1943- Bialystok Ghetto Uprising

October 14, 1943- Sobibor Uprising

October 7, 1944- Auschwitz-Birkenau Uprising

1942- Kruszyna Uprising

1943- Minsk-Mazowiecki Uprising, Janowska Uprising

Wasn't there also an uprising in 1943 at Treblinka that destroyed much of the
facilities there?
