I've recently been on a little vacation to spend some "quality" time with my parents (it doesn't seem to matter that I'm now closer to thirty than twenty - once yer back home they still see you as a kid...).

Right, they live like out in the middle of nowhere so of course the only means to contact the outside world is through 56k dial-up.

One day **** was working fine. Next day - when I try to access the Internet the modem tries to dial up a number that, after some research, belongs somewhere in the Cook Islands. Luckily, my parents have blocked the modem so it won't make calls to other countries so they should probably not receive a phone bill in the 5000$ range.

Bad thing is I couldn't find the program or if it is some kind of script that keeps on changing the phone number used for connecting to the Internet...

...I guess most (?) people here use broadband but has it happened to any of you?

I use broadband myself, but I think a combinaton of Spybot and AdAware might take care of the problem. The problem is, since you would need to download them from the net and if the modem is inoperable you cannot get at them... Maybe if you can get some friend to send them to you on a floppy disk?

Yes it's common practice those programs are called dialers. try to find some software with will search them on your comp and if necessary will remove them...
