LA HABANA, CUBA Jan 4 (*******) - A group of U.S. and other peace activists including Cindy Sheehan plan to march to the gates of the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo, Cuba on Jan. 11 to protest against abuses at the prison camp for terrorism suspects, organizers said on Thursday.
The protest in Cuba is part of planned international protests against the prison camp next week, five years after it opened with the first detainees flown in from the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan that followed the Sept. 11 attacks.
The group of 15 marchers will include former detainee Asif Iqbal, a British citizen who was released after two years with no charges, and relatives of current prisoner Omar Deghayes, a British resident. Sheehan, whose son was killed in the Iraq war, has become a well-known peace activist in the United States.
Cuba's Communist government -- which has long condemned the prison camp run by its political enemy the United States -- has said the protesters can march to the Cuban security fence surrounding the U.S. base, said Matt Daloisio, spokesman for Witness Against Torture.
Witness Against Torture is a Catholic group in New York that helped organized the protest with CODEPINK, a women's pacifist group based in Los Angeles, and Global Exchange, a rights group based in San Francisco.
Washington has faced steady criticism over the Guantanamo prison from human rights groups and foreign governments, because most of the prisoners have not been charged and because of reports of abuse of prisoners. The United States has said it does not use torture, and that the camp was necessary to deal with the particular circumstances of its war on terrorism.
Twenty-two Witness Against Torture members marched in protest to the Guantanamo base in December 2005 but did not get beyond the Cuban security gate some 5 miles (8 km) from the U.S. naval base.
The activists plan a conference on prison abuses and screenings of the award-winning docudrama Road to Guantanamo, which recounts Iqbal's ordeal from his arrest in October 2001 in Afghanistan to his release from Guantanamo with four other Britons in March 2004.
"I am traveling all the way from Dubai because my heart is overflowing with grief over the abuse and ongoing detention of my son," said Deghayes' mother, Zohra Zewawi, in a statement. She says her son has been tortured and blinded in one eye during detention.
The U.S. military has quickened the pace for releasing captives held at Guantanamo. The Pentagon said in December that the prison's population now stands at approximately 395 inmates, out of more than 770 who have been held there since the camp opened in January 2002.
Asked about the planned protest outside the base, Col. Bill Costello, spokesman for the U.S. military's Southern Command, which oversees the Guantanamo base, said, "I think we have demonstrated during the past five years that Guantanamo Bay is a detention facility that is run in a safe, humane, legal and transparent manner."
"There have been scores of soldiers, sailers, uniformed service members and civilians who have operated the camps in just a tremendous fashion," he added.

After hurricane Katrina, she went over to New Orleans to protest its "occupation" by the National Guard. Calling her a moonbat is an understatement.

She would love that, how about we deny her entry. Loose all records and claim she is Cuban. That should force the Cubans to mend their ways and hope we take her back. A time in a communist country will have her stirring up trouble there. However the Cubans may just shoot her instead.

Christ yes - it's absolutely breathtaking. I wonder if that snaggletoothed **** knows that Gitmo is the one and only prison in Cuba that the Red Cross has been allowed into since the early 1980's.

I think she's a Socialist. A down right pinko Socialist. She hates eveything that's going on with America but is buddy-buddies with the likes of Hugo Chaves, Harry Belafonte, and pretty much every other Socialist/Anti-American in the world. She is rich with quotes.
On December 13, Sheehan traveled to Ireland, where she met Irish Foreign Affairs minister Dermot Ahern. She voiced her objection to U.S. aircraft refueling at Shannon Airport, stating, "Your Government, even though they didn't send troops to Iraq, are complicit in the crimes by allowing the planes to land and refuel"
"I admire President Chávez for his strength to resist the United States" while saying she agreed with Harry Belafonte's statement that President Bush is "the greatest terrorist in the world."
On July 5, Sheehan appeared on MSNBC's Hardball to discuss the war and her upcoming hunger strike. She affirmed her view of George W. Bush, calling him "the biggest terrorist in the world" and "worse than Osama Bin Laden," and conceded that she would rather live under Venezuela's Hugo Chávez than President Bush.
“What they're saying, too, is like, it's OK for Israel to have nuclear weapons. But Iran or Syria better not get nuclear weapons. ... It's OK for Israel to occupy Palestine, ... for the United States to occupy Iraq, but it's not OK for Syria to be in Lebanon. They're a bunch of (expletive) hypocrites.”
“This... this... 'coyote' is like, just another tool of this wicked administration, ... I mean are we supposed to accept the fact that it's okay for a predator like this to have nuclear weapons but it's not okay for say, a road runner or a baby harp seal? Coyotes like Wile E. are already waging nuclear war on defenseless road runners every day. I believe the pictures taken by my undercover operatives speak for themselves.”
“I'm just so honored that the universe chose me to be the spark that has set off a raging inferno.”

Wow. Just wow. At first, I found her she was annoying, but I believe that it is someone's right to protest the war, as much as i disagree with them. Now I think we should drop her in Arbil and allow her to rant and rave about how the evil American Empire shouldn't of came and took out Saddams regime, and about how it was probably good for Saddam to stand up to Bush. I'm betting that the Kurds will be real "tolerant" of her rhetoric.

Watching the liberal manufactured Cindy Sheehan drama blow up in the liberals face was as entertaining as watching Rathergate blow up in the liberals faces.
You got to admit it wasnt a bad strategy, her liberal promoters just over estimated their ability to control her. Kind of hard to keep drawing on the heart strings of the American public when she repeatedly exposes her self as a complete and utter idiot, surrounded and promoted by complete and utter idiots.
I always chuckle when the liberal die hards respond with the one argument that from the beginning made it so hard to show this for what it was - "she lost her son - how can you judge her"
Funny ask her how she judges the parents of fallen soldiers who supported the war and their sons service?
I'm not saying she should be shot - but if the US gov't is so evil and she'd rather live under Chavez, why doesn't she apply for political asylum in Cuba or Venezuela?
I keep waiting for the rafts of liberal refugees to start landing on the beach of the workers paradise known as cuba.

As a frequent traveller to Cuba, I think she will have her eyes opened by the reality of poverty in that country, and maybe learn some appreciation. I still believe the worst president in the history of the US has to have his retarded, oil mongering ass put on the street. Castro will love this opportunity to slap the US in the face, he still refuses to cash the $5000/year lease cheques he gets for Gitmo from the US.
Give her one thing, she gets a lot of support, and that means RICH people...

Nope its illegal to fly from America to Cuba, but you can fly to Canada then to Cuba.
The CIA should plant bugs on her so the Cubans find them and lock her ass up in one of their prisons.

Actually, though USA residents can go through Toronto or Mexico to get a flight to Cuba, I'm pretty sure it's illegal for them to visit the country regardless. This is why Cuba does not stamp passports and issues a tourist card. Cuba welcomes American tourists (and their bucks) and I've met a few Yanks down there over the years. From what I understand there is a big fine awaiting back in the USA if caught. And there are notorious prisons in Cuba for political discontents and drugs/prostitutes/thievery etc. which is why there is almost no crime in Cuba, which is why over 1 in 100 Canadians visit the country each year.
I just did 2 weeks at a nice resort for about $650 US including meals all drinks, room and flight so what's not to like?

My definition of a moonbat would be someone so out of touch with reality they start a war under false pretenses and refuse to let go of it even as it proves to be unwinnable.

Good one, Budgie.
Personally, I think the person who started a war under false pretenses and the mother of the soldier killed in that war are both moonbats. However, the "moonbattiness" of one has proven to be far more costly.
