Alcohol is a terrible drug for your child's health. Marijuana on the other hand is perfectly safe.

The age limit for alcohol used to be 18, and it's really better that way (you can't stop people under 21 from getting their hands on alcohol...trust me, I would know). The problem is that if you changed it to 18 all of a sudden in the US, everyone would be going out and buying it legally because of the novelty, and as such for some time there would be a drastic increease in drunkenness and stuff and whatnot.
actually in high school alcohol is the hardest drug to get for the simple fact that it is legal and there is no demand for a good underground as there is for other drugs.
btw, marijuana is not a drug is a ****en herb people. it grows straight out of the ground.
anyway the drinking age should be 18. old enough to die for your country but you cant buy a beer. what kind of bull**** is that?

Of course there's no underground. All you need to do is get a fake ID if you look old enough and go buy some beer. If you don't look 21, you can hand some money to someone who does and has a fake ID, and ask them to buy you a six-pack or whatever. Maybe it's a little more complicated than buying marijuana or the like, but it's really not all that hard to get your hands on. As I said before: trust me, I would know. ;)

me too, but i could think of 5 people that i could walk up to and get weed. easy as that. it was always more complicated for alcohol, but stealing for my parents when they where too drunk to notice always worked best.

I know plenty of people who I could get weed from too. My point is though that even if it's tougher to get alcohol, it's still not tough at all.
Before I moved, we had a liquor cabinet just FULL of whiskey, gin, rum, wine, you name it...I used to take from that on occasion since my parents never drink anything hard anymore. Unfortunately, they decided to dump it all prior to the move. :(
Ah I'm glad there the age limit here is almost non existing :d If you're 14 you can go and buy beer and other stuff, chances are noone will even say a thing. Wonderfull :)
I don't have a problem with that at all, better learn how to deal with alcohol when you're still young and your parents can guide you then to never be able to drink till you're 21 and then get toasted all the time.
Besides a country which has soldiers as young as 18 dieing for them should atleast allow them to also do all the grown up things.

18 here in Australia.
But yeah, the bottleshop's in poor areas don't look for ID, they only want the money.
I had my first drink at, umm.. 14 or somthin, but yeah, only have about 6 beers a month now, don't really like it as much as i used to.

When I lived in Germany, it was 16 to drink beer and wine.
16 also to smoke.
18 for everything else.
Here in the US it's 21.
You can legally take the life of another human being at 18, but can't enjoy a beer or have a shot of tequila at a bar until 21.
Makes a lot of sense....
Man, it was funny when I studied in the Netherlands and those American fratboys and sorority girls showed up and realized the situation. Then all their friends came for spring break and realized it even harder.
Had a laugh watching them drinking, smoking and eating mushrooms like there was no tomorrow!
No, seriously, it was a bit scary. Of course other nationalties overdid stuff there as well but the American age limit and the fact that they came there as a close-knit group added some extra to their behaviour.

I'm 17 and don't drink. I think the drinking age should be 16 but the driving age should be when you're 18.

I think there are valid arguments to be made regarding the fact that one is legally an adult at 18 in the United States but can't drink until the age of 21. However, the fact is, raising the drinking age to 21 has saved lives, so I support leaving it.
in the UK it's, drinking and voting at 18, driving at 17, wroking, smoking, betting and *** at 16
There over 21 bars and pubs here, a bit of a joke really it means you get less chance of people under 18 going in.

Well an old argument (that was often made during 'Nam) is that we can draft 18 yearolds to mess som viets up, but they cant drink after that. I think it still stands.
As for saving lifes, well, if you BAN alcohol, it might also save lifes, but as we found out during the "dry laws" its not the best thing to do.

My logic tells me that if you're allowed to vote and drive at the age of 18 (in Sweden, that is) you should be allowed to buy alcohol at the same age. But when I see some kid all passed out, sleeping in their own vomits...
...I think they should be all locked up until they learn how to behave... ;)

In Denmark the legal age in bars, etc. is 18, buying it in a supermarket the legal age is 15 :cantbeli:
18 is good enough, it's all a matter of teaching the teenagers to be responsible.

I admit your points are valid, but I find it incomprihensible that a country can send someone to war (Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.) and when they get home they can't celebrate their return with a drink if they are under 21.
It doesn't add up, giving young soldiers the heavy responsibilities of going to war and then telling them when they get home: you are not old enough to drink  If one one can go to war one can have a drink.

I agree that it seems odd that one is considered an adult at 18 and yet not be able to buy alcohol until the age of 21. However, the reasoning behind the law is sound; it does save lives. That is why I support leaving the drinking age at 21. In the long run...the lives saved are worth waiting a few years to be legal.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not against drinking. I'm just against losing lives because of drinking and driving. No, I don't believe that leaving the drinking age at 21 prevents kids from drinking, but it has been shown to significantly reduce traffic deaths resulting from drinking and driving. Inexperienced drivers + alcohol = death. (the same can be said for experienced drivers.... drinking and driving is never good, but drinking + inexperience is even more deadly)
Perhaps the answer is not a drinking age of 21 but stricter drunk driving penalites?

I think it should be 18. Because by time kids are 16 or 17 they are starting to drink, and by time they are 18 they are going to parties and **** anyway.
I mean ive been drinking since i was like 14. My pa and i used to sit down and drink a beer at dinner.

I think its absolutely ridiculous, doesnt make sense at all. A 21 year old drunk is much more dangerous than a 16 year old drunk.
Military bases used to turn a blind eye to the drinking age in my experience, although in the last several years they have become a lot stricter due to the bull**** PCness thats so rampant these days. Having said that, the bars out in military towns dont give a **** for the most part. Ill bet that 75% of their bussiness is from under 21 year olds.

I agree with that.
My personal opinion on the matter is, and please, not getting on to anyone, is that about anywehre I've been, the drinking age is anywhere between 16 and 18. It should be 18 here in the US as well.
18 is considered the universal legal adult age, for voting, drafting etc.
Let 'em enjoy a cold brewski when they feel like it :)

I never drive when I've consumed alcoholical bevrages, most of the time I drink at home or when we go out we take the bus or our bikes. Nevertheless many people still drink too much when they need to drive, but statistics have shown that 40+ males tend to drink the most and stil take a car. So should legal drinking age then be 45 orso ???
I think more common sense and perhaps stricter drunk penalties are the answer and not age limits since they are kinda useless imho.

put a cop at the door of bars...then if he spots a drunk walking out....he forces them to hand over the keys...or just make it the bars responsibility to make sure no one is dui
