great pics, thanks.
are these guys a similar unit to something like SEALs or RMC?
The similiar unit of navy seals in french navy is commando hubert. Those guys are from commando trepel and commando jaubert, more like RMC i think.

Nice pics, but they are rather old. Almost 10 years old...
They use other weapons and equipment now...

Commando Hubert are similar to SEALs in the sense that they specialize in combat swimmer operations. As for the other four Commandos, they are not similar to Royal Marine Commandos, since they are more specialised and operate in smaller groups, and are directly assigned to COS. Under the Commando 2001 Plan, they were given the following specialisations:
Commando Jaubert: VBSS, non-combabtant evacuation and Maritime counter-terrorism
Commando Trepel: VBSS, non-combatant evacuation
Commando De Penfentenyo: reconaissance (beach recce etc)
Commando De Monfort: artillery, naval gunfire and close air support forward observation, heavy weapons.
Royal Marine Commandos, in their amphibious assault role, would be more akin to units making up the 9th Marine Brigade (9e BLBMa), although of course 3 Commando Brigade contains specialised sub-units such as BRF and 148FOB. And so the eternal debate goes on......

If comparisons with the Royal Marines (BTW why does everyone use the abbreviation RMC????) are being made, Commando Jaubert and Commando Trepel are probably closer to FSRT, although I suspect that overall (ie certain individuals excepted) they are trained to a higher standard. Commando De Monfort, as AROUETLJ says are closer to 148 (Meiktla) Bty RA, although I suspect that 148 Bty are trained to a higher level.

Good camo for the rocky area there.
What do these guys train for specifically? I have nothing personal against the french but I don't think that they have too many plans to go to many wars so are these guys more anti-terror?

Military isn't for making wars but for preventing they from happening ! Keep that in mind, don't want to fight just for fighting when there is no reason.

Unlike the US SF, most of the operations of the french SF are not related in the media that's why may think they don't do a lot, but beleive me, they're as active as US or British SF, so don't make a judjement only on what you see and don't see in the mass medias.

Among other places, French SOF, including Commandos marine, are in C-JSOTF Afghanistan. It was a Commandos marine officer who had to change his call sign from Homard ("Lobster") because it sounded too much like Omar, as in Mullah Omar, confusing US forces on the same net. The French SOF are conducting primarily SR in the border region around Spin Boldak, on the Qandahar-Quetta road.

French commandos-marine are the only french units allowed to dress their "béret" (not sure of the english word) in the british way, since commando Kieffer was integrated to Lord Lovat Brigade on D-Day (Ouistreham casino action)...
Commando Hubert is about diving combat in the same way at Comsubin (help me for the exact word), Kampfschwimmer and SBS...

Hmm, could someone explain why these French "marine commandos" are not wearing the standard French "CCE" pattern of camouflage ?
The pattern these guys are wearing looks more like Woodland, but what would I know...

Mout:
I wasn't inferring that they don't do anything, just that, unlike us Americans, the French are less likely to go "get" into a war. Therefore, most training would be wasted if they trained for an offensive war that they never planned on fighting. Therefore, I would assume, because my knowledge base is the media in this arena, that they train for mainly defensive and anti-terror stuff. I knew that they were in Afgh. I didn't get to serve with any but would have been proud to if I could have. We boarded a chopper next to some French SF type dudes that were boarding to go somewhere else, that's as close as I ever got.
Tell me more if you know about there SOP as far as Afgh type OPs go.

Shrek : why do you want to go to war at all cost. Reading some users here i must wonder why you always talk about going to war, make war, fight somebody. That's right France don't make as much ops as USA do, but we do some we are sure a military action is needed. Maybe you are the "gendarmes du monde" but you could also make a mess of the world by fighting everybody and anybody : the point is > do you have to go, as far as you're concerned ?

These pictures are old; at the time, the French company "Kerdier" in Saint Malo was licence producing Gore Tex ECWCS jackets, trousers and ponchos in Woodland camo for the French SF including the commandos Marine, 1er RPIMa and 13 RDP.
They still use a few of those even though the CE pattern has replaced most of the old Woodland types.

Sorry mate, but that goes for every SOF unit in the world. What we know of the US and British SOF activities is but a minimal fraction of it. Most of what they do isn't covered by the media either.
The only time SOF units get to be in the spotlight is when they take part in largely publicized, large-scale operations or major wars, like OEF or OIF. It goes for everyone. We saw a lot of the French COS during the recent ops in Africa (Artemis, etc). US and UK units get more coverage because they participate in more such large operations than most units. Hence, the illusion we get to witness everything they do. And even then, besides the fact they are on the ground, we know little about what they actually do.
Salut p-)
