I still say the F-4 is the most wicked looking of the cold-war era fighters...if not all time.

X2... Sweet jet. If I had my choice of vintage jets to own, this'd be the one.

Any chance of getting a hold of that lighter?

Still one good looking aircraft, no matter who uses it. Good stuff, Thanks man! Any idea on upgrades done to them? I assume they are still in service.

Yes, I don't know what it is about the F-4 that appeals to me so much, but I still think it's one of the best looking fighter jets ever.

I remember having a photographic book of US aircraft when I was about 15.... The F-4 was a highlight. I think I still have it at my moms place....Maybe i'll take a few scans

Beautiful plane, no doubt, but outdated. Does anyone know what Japan's plans are vis a vis replacing the F4? Are they being phased out and replaced by F15s or is Japan thinking of buying the JSF or F22 or something?

Love the lead sled, tough as nails.Used more fuel during missions than a small country did in a day.......There was something about going to the high power ramp and seeing the shockwave of diamonds in the afterburner flame, especially at night...awesome

The answer might be closer to 'all of the above' JASDF F-4s take on maritime strike and secondary air-defense missions. They are at the moment looking at a replacement in F-15E variant or FA-18E/F Super Hornet. Japan currently have no requirement for the F-35, but may pursue that option if their F-22 acquisition is denied or delayed in the future.

Well said. I am betting they will go with the F-15E until they get the F-22. Mitsubishi factories are already tooled up for the production of the F-15 so opting for the F-18 would be a long shot. (or purely political string pulling)

The F-22/35 would look boss with JASDF colors. p-)

the japanese sure know how to paint their aircrafts in a fancy style;) ...
especially this dark blue/grey - camo is nice, afaik it is the same as used on their mitsubishi f-2's ?

is the dark blue camouflage "reserved" for the maritime-strike f-4's ?
i'm asking because the phantom on the third pic carries an exocet-style missile.
well the colour would make sense regarding the environment maritime strike jets are operating in. ;)
