Halifax, NS
A rare site of two Canadian subs sailing together into homeport for the Christmas holidays. Seen leading the pack is the HMCS Cornerbrook with the HMCS Windsor following. The HMCS Cornerbrook and the HMCS Windsor arrived in the early dawn coming along side in Halifax today in Nova Scotia on the 21st of December 2006

Those subs are crap. If I'm not mistaken they are the same subs that the British built then immediately dry docked due to poor performance. We later bought them diesel electric subs that cost Canada a mint just to make sea worthy again then have a sailor killed ferrying it back home beacuse of poor electrical design.

Canada has no need for submarines, why we bought three of them is beyond me.

Wow.. where to begin..

1: Please explain, WHY they are crap.
(specifics please)

2: Please cite the source you are using as to why the British mothballed them.

3: Please.. oh pretty please, explain whay Canada has no need for subs.. and your qualifications in offering such an opinion.

I'm no sub "expert", but based on some research, and some conversations with "sub Guys"...

1: The Victoria class are one the fastest and quietest long range SSKs

They were designed to do one thing, hunt and kill Soviet Boomers.

Are they top of the line 10 years on? No.. but still in the top 5, and still very dangerous.

2: We've updated them with modern sensors/sonar ect.. nothing wrong with what they can see, hear, track or hit.

3:The British mothballed the fleet due to budget concerns, as well as a decision to go all-nuclear.

4: All the problems we've encountered are due to the poor storage by BAE systems. Not because of poor design.

The subs have cost us more $$$ than was originaly planned, and of course we're still behind schedule.. but buying *new* would have been more expensive.

Considering the amount of coastline we have, how the hell do we not need subs. Must be the most ignorant statement I've heard so far this week.

Here's a whole bunch of pics

No the Dutch Navy operates four Walrus class submarines, a bit bigger than Dolphin class.

We only have two large coastlines to patrol, not inlcuding the Northern part.

Let me start with a couple of links.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/cdnsubs/

http://www.hazegray.org/navhist/canada/current/upholder/

Note the dates in which the subs were built, then decommissioned and dry docked. Also note that only one sub of the four is operational. The amount of money being wasted to retrofit these subs is incredible. With an already starved military why are we wasting 1 billion plus on 4 old subs?

Why don't we need subs? Who exactly has subs that we need to be concerned about? No one. The US would not permit anyone of hostile intentions anywhere near their coast or ours. I'm not saying Canada should piggy back off the US as an answer. As of now we have one operational sub for the cost of 1 billion and counting. Not exactly a serious presence in defence of our coast line, nor is it cheap. We have 4 subs and yet we have no method of heavy transport for our LAV's, tanks or any other vehicle. Our aging C-130 hercules fleet is in need of replacement, our F-18's are in the same boat. Most of our military operations are conducted on the surface, usually land. So we spend a pile on submersible vehicles? Doesn't make any sense to me.

There are at least two active as the pictures are of the two of them returning from exercises in December, Chicoutimi is obviously not operational and I am not sure about the fourth.

We don't want to depend on the Americans and the ability to have our subs to monitor our waters not just for defence but for economics is invaluable. Should we have bought these subs and not new ones, maybe, that is a valid debate but the arguement that a country with sea borders our size does not need subs is in error, in my opinion.

No, the only worth buying are the 212 and the 214 class subs. p-)
