IDF reports crash caused due to technical malfunction; Hamas claims: UAV in our possession, we'll soon present video documenting it. UAV crashes in same area two months ago

An Israel Defense Forces UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) crashed in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday.

The aircraft crashed near the town of Beit Hanoun following a technical malfunction. The circumstances of the incident are still unclear.

Upon hearing the news on the crash, Palestinians in mosques in the Strip expressed their joy and claimed that the aircraft was in their possession and that they would soon present a video documenting it.

Koran verses were sounded on public address systems, declaring that "God is helping the fighters to snipe and better hit their targets."

In November, a drone crashed over the western Negev and parts of it landed in the Nativ Haasara area, near the border with the Gaza Strip. The UAV was in the air as part of the IDF's operational activity in the northern Gaza Strip and it was used to provide an aerial picture and additional intelligence aspects.

Just for the record though, I don't say that Islamic propaganda isn't a joke. And comparing Palestinians, (note Palestinians not Hamas, Fatah etc) with the Taleban is a joke chris.

It's not that simple but it's not much more sophisticated, you can buy everything that is installed on it in the civilian market.

They could use it to observe IDF troops if they take the camera off and turn it into an observation device, but I don't think they have enough knowledge. They'll probably send it to Syria and from there to Iran.

I guess it retransmits everything via secure channel and doesn't keep anything more than a small buffer, could it be exploitable by the enemy?

Something is not right in this event. I fly R/C aircraft of a similar size and crashes are common in this recreation. The aircraft looks like it landed rather than crashed. Make of it what you will fellow r/c flyers have the same impression from the photogragh.
Because it's not your r/c plane.
If it looses contact with the base station it keeps on circling in the same area until it lands.

Who programmed that thing? Afaik most UAV's return to base when loosing contact.

It can't communicate with satellites or anything like that, so it can't know where is the base or how to get back to it if the connection is lost and anyway it has no base, it's just a soldier with a laptop.
