South Korean submarine force is yet little over a decade old and is still small in size compared to neighboring countries. It has proven itself a lethal force however during various training with foreign countries such as RIMPAC. While outnumbered by NK subs SK has far superior submarines and operational capabilities.

A new Submarine Operations Command will be established with the introduction of U214 class subs to ROK Navy. It will consist of 9 U209 boats, 9 U214s, 3 Dolphins and a Submarine Rescue Ship. Korean built 3000ton+ subs are expected to join in the future.

===Dolphin class midget subs===================================
First ever underwater vessel to be employed by the Korean Navy,
Dolphin class midget sub is an indegenious design, built in the late 80s to counter NK submarine forces. Mainly used for SF insertion and mine laying,
it does have two 406mm torpedo tubes and has limited ASW/ASUW capabilities. It helped ROK Navy prepare for more sophisticated subs later to be added to the fleet. 3 are still in service and deployed mainly for special operations.

During RIMPAC 1998 Lee Jong Moo(SS066) "sunk" over 40 ships and was never detected. On other joint exercises 209s scored "smoke" hits on US carriers and amphibious assault ships.

====U214 Son Won Il class==================================
Don't think I really need to elaborate here ;)
Hopefully these new boats will greatly increase the capabilities of ROK Navy.
Korean 214s are also expected to carry indigenous cruise missiles.

9 U214s ? Has there been an official increase in the numbers of these subs ? I'm only going by official news here and there, but I had no idea that the Navy wants to add to the 3 being built in the near future.

I think the future ROKN sub fleet should be more than enough to handle any pressing concerns in the region, especially since we only had one since the early 90s. It might not be as big as the Chinese or as experienced as the JMSDF but it's a good force nontheless.
