(LIP-jl) -- Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos praised Peru for its cooperation with his country in the war on drugs currently being fought along the jungle border shared by both countries.

Santos admitted the existence of insurgent groups and drug cultivations along the border and stated that both countries are currently hammering out a plan that would greatly expand the exchange of intelligence and jointly operated missions.

This, according to Santos, will not be difficult to establish since Colombia and Peru are already jointly patrolling the Putumayo River.

"Previously, insurgents and drug traffickers would flee from authorities by going to the opposing country's territory, thereby evading detainment. In other words, it was a freeway at the service of criminals," sustained Santos.

The problem was very easy to solve and patrol boats now incorporate Peruvian and Colombian authorities to permit pursuits in both countries.

"The Putumayo River was instantly regained by authorities," informed Santos.

According to the Defense Minister, information and communication are vital elements to success in the area.

Colombia and Peru share a border approximately 1,626 kilometers long, with few inhabitants due its jungle terrain.
