GOP hits Pelosi's 'hypocrisy' on wage bill
By Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
January 12, 2007
House Republicans yesterday declared "something fishy" about the major tuna company in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district being exempted from the minimum-wage increase that Democrats approved this week.
"I am shocked," said Rep. Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican and his party's chief deputy whip, noting that Mrs. Pelosi campaigned heavily on promises of honest government. "Now we find out that she is exempting hometown companies from minimum wage. This is exactly the hypocrisy and double talk that we have come to expect from the Democrats."
On Wednesday, the House voted to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour.
The bill also extends for the first time the federal minimum wage to the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands. However, it exempts American Samoa, another Pacific island territory that would become the only U.S. territory not subject to federal minimum-wage laws.
One of the biggest opponents of the federal minimum wage in Samoa is StarKist Tuna, which owns one of the two packing plants that together employ more than 5,000 Samoans, or nearly 75 percent of the island's work force. StarKist's parent company, Del Monte Corp., has headquarters in San Francisco, which is represented by Mrs. Pelosi. The other plant belongs to California-based Chicken of the Sea.
"There's something fishy going on here," said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, North Carolina Republican.
During the House debate yesterday on stem-cell research, Mr. McHenry raised a parliamentary inquiry as to whether an amendment could be offered that would exempt American Samoa from stem-cell research, "just as it was for the minimum-wage bill."
A clearly perturbed Rep. Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat who was presiding, cut off Mr. McHenry and shouted, "No, it would not be."
"So, the chair is saying I may not offer an amendment exempting American Samoa?" Mr. McHenry pressed.
"The gentleman is making a speech and will sustain," Mr. Frank shouted as he slammed his large wooden gavel against the rostrum.
Some Republicans who voted in favor of the minimum-wage bill were particularly irritated to learn yesterday -- after their vote -- that the legislation did not include American Samoa.
"I was troubled to learn of this exemption," said Rep. Mark Steven Kirk, Illinois Republican. "My intention was to raise the minimum wage for everyone. We shouldn't permit any special favors or exemptions that are not widely discussed in Congress. This is the problem with rushing legislation through without full debate."
A spokeswoman for Mrs. Pelosi said Wednesday that the speaker has not been lobbied in any way by StarKist or Del Monte.
Why are these areas exempt from the minimum wage hike?

As another mention earlier, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." The hype up of "100 hours" is an attempt at reliving the nostagia of FDR "100 days." There are about 15,000 earmarked/"Pork Barrel" in question and how many of those get through session will determine if the whole ethics in government from the Democrat and Republican is rhetorics or not.

While I hate the democratic party, I will pass on the open shot here. Both are totally corrupt like this. While the Democrats complain of Republicans being in the pocket of business, so are they, just different businesses. Nothing either side claims is worth listening to because they do it themselves.

Politics as usual, first you have politicos favoring campaign contributors and then you other reps bitching about laws THEY helped passed because the didn't read the ƒucking thing before the signed it.
Not too sure which is worse, a representative representing his or her home district to the point of @ss ƒucking human beings to save a company money or a representative bitching because they were to lazy to actually care what they were voting for.
Both disgust me...

The difference is that when Repubs are exposed they generally are shamed and resign (Foley). When Dems are exposed they just brazen their way through (too many to list). Democrates are pretty much free of shame.
In any case the Reps while not perfect have far less corruption problems than the Dems. In fact if you look at the Bush administration you see very few actual scandals except manufactured ones like Plame, or policy disagreements packaged as scandals by the media like WMD/Iraq. Meanwhile the Clinton administration was chockablock full of crooks including the Clintons themselves.

Frankly, this looks to me like the data supporting the vote was sexed up. The Dems spun this data to get the vote they wanted. Only now after the vote do we learn what they really voted for? I call for impeachment. No blood for tuna.

Now there is a generalization...I think both sides do a pretty good job hiding the crookedness and, at times, the dumb ones get caught in such a way that the sheeple of this nation actually want something done...
The problem is, that most people in the U.S. don't even know what the hell is going on.
That's the whole problem with the Clinton thing...
The Republicans took it from the prosecuting attorney and ran with it, turning it into a silly *** scandal (which most people simply do not care about when it involves consenting adults), then Clinton screwed up and lied while under oath.
The thing is, that while he was doing whatever he was doing with his aid, he was also under oath for another ****** misconduct trial claiming that he never had ****** relations with another woman besides his wife AND had a system in place to keep people quite by bribing them with cushy jobs with his buddies up at Revlon....but none of this ever gets discussed, because A) Americans simply do not care, and B) the Republicans dropped the ball and hammered him on the wrong damn thing...they could have had the guy out and completely impeached, but noooooo...
Now, take Foley...dude was gay or so he claims...personally I think its a cover...(not all that big a deal)...what we do know is that he had hints of being a pedophile and had some proof tagging along with him...that's a HUGE anchor around the neck of the party so they boot him once it gets out in the public.
Dems do the same thing. If the Republicans hadn't whined so badly about separations of power when the Feds went after Johnson, you would have had a Democratic Party ƒuck up get nailed, but hey, I guess they were worried they might get nailed along with some of the Democrats...
The Republicans shot themselves in the foot again...I mean, the only way to nail a Rep from the New Orleans area is to arrest him, the people voted the mayor back why wouldn't the vote again for a black Democrat that ONLY stole money...or took bribes?

Except for the fact that the person Foley sent IMs to was 18 at the time. So your theory that the public does not care about two consenting adults is not true there.
The only statment you can make is that the Media only cares when it is a republican doing so. Gerry Studds got stand ovations after actually having Intercourse with a page, somthing that Foley never did

Same sh*t, different party. Gee, I'm so surprised. I would like to smack the plastic face right off Nancy Pelosi. Ever wonder how she managed to rise so high in the Democratic party the way she did? She's probably a completely ruthless c*nt. Now turn it around and tell me guys like Trent Lott, Tom DeLay and Dennis Hastert weren't busy assraping people when they ruled. You can't have it one way without considering the other side. Placing a greater degree of blame on politicians of the opposite party is an exercise in mental masturbation.

wtf happened to peeps like this? They're an endangered species, near extinction. It's a disastrous side affect of people in Congress who has been there for decade or more. They built a power base that they grew extremely attach to and that sentiment permeated to most others on Capitol Hill. When it come to "honest" politician, only a small minority actually talk the talk and walk the walk.
