Blasts Hit Police Stations in South Iraq's Basra
Wed Apr 21, 2004 12:22 AM ET
BASRA, Iraq (*******) - Explosions ripped through three police stations in Iraq's southern city of Basra on Wednesday, causing many casualties, police and witnesses said.
Police could not say how many people had been killed or wounded in the blasts, but one car carrying children to kindergarten had been caught in one explosion.
Two police stations in the central Ashar district were hit by mortar bombs, police said. The third police station targeted was in the Old City of Basra.
The explosions in the morning rush hour sowed panic across Basra, which had been relatively peaceful during this month's surge of violence in other parts of central and southern Iraq.

Car Bombs Hit Police Stations in Iraq's Basra
BASRA, Iraq (*******) - Explosions ripped through three police stations in Iraq (news - web sites)'s southern city of Basra on Wednesday, causing many casualties, a British military spokesman said.
"There were three separate explosions at police stations at about 7:15 a.m. (11:15 p.m. EDT Tuesday)," Squadron Leader John Arnold told *******. "They were vehicle-based improvised explosive devices."
He said there were reports of heavy casualties, but no exact figures were available, partly because British troops who control Basra could not reach two of the police stations.
"They are being stoned," Arnold said, adding that no casualties among British forces had been reported.
Arnold said it was too early to say if the attacks were suicide bombings.
Police had earlier said they believed the blasts at two police stations in central Basra had been caused by mortar bombs.

Blasts Rip Iraq Police Stations, Kill 40
BASRA, Iraq - Near-simultaneous explosions killed 40 people and injured some 200 others at three police stations in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Wednesday, witnesses and a hospital source said.
At one station in the Saudia district of Basra, four vehicles were seen destroyed including two school buses. At least one of the school buses appeared to have been full of passengers, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.
The facade of the Saudia station was also heavily damaged.
Police Maj. Ouda al-Jabiri, at Saudia, said the cause of the blasts was not immediately known. There was a hole two yards deep and three yards wide in front of the Saudi station.
British military spokesman Squadron Leader Jonathan Arnold said the blasts were believed to have been caused by car bombs.

I wonder if Al Jazeera and the left will remember that next time they claim the US is slaughtering civilians indecriminately.

And about the stoning of UK troops that were trying to make their way to the scene...... the Iraqis were mighty pissed to the coalition as they first tought that the hits were by coalition missiles......
I even saw on my TV some Iraqi police officer yelling that "I saw then hit, they were (coalition) missiles" and he was carrying around something that he tought was a piece of missile or something to that effect..... i think....

Was this the footage of the Iraqi Policeman surrounded by a small crowd speaking of his experience when the incident occurred?
If it is, the BBC translation was that the man said:
"I had just escorted 4 British soldiers through the Police Station gates when a huge missile struck the gates. The British soldiers ran and I ran too."

There was no translation, narrator just telling that Iraqis were angry cause they first tought that (coalition) missiles had hit them....
and yes the Police officer was in a MOB.... and was yelling and gesturing like a madman.... and seemed to me as being very, very angry.

Now its 4 car bombs (in total) in Basra.... and one also demolished an appartment building in Riyad, Saubi Arabia. :|
Whenever there is a bombing of innocent civilians by the insurgents we hear nothing from our self-nominated, anti-American forum members; however, they can't wait to post about the difficulties Americans have avoiding collateral damage.
Now that we know 23 children in a schoolbus were killed, where are all the apologists for the Baathist and Shiite thugs who committed this heinous act? Hypocrites of the worst sort.

The police officer who said he saw a missile hit should be investigated IMO

If you've ever been attacked with that amount of explosives and known what the hell was going on you're a better man than me...
