TAMPA - The Marines may have been the last of the military branches to join U.S. Special Operations Command, but the Corps is the first to outfit its commandos with a sophisticated rifle sight that increases their chances of picking off targets in the dark.
The Magnum Universal Night Sight was developed by Optical Systems Technology, a small company in Freeport, Pa. The sights easily attach to sniper rifles and are permanently aligned, according to company President Paul Maxin.

They've worked up a unit that's been attached to SOCOM, aptly named MARSOCOM if memory serves.

I don't get it; the PVS-14, PVS-22, PAS-13 etc. don't count? How is the USMC the "first to outfit its commandos with a sophisticated rifle sight that increases their chances of picking off targets in the dark"?

Correct use of English grammar would dictate the use of 'marine' OR 'U.S. Marine.'
'Marine' on its own is no different from calling someone a soldier or sailor - it's simply a noun. 'U.S. Marine' is a title, and should be capitalized. 'Marine" by itself is widely capitalized, but common use does not equal correct use.

See that's the difference there, soldiers and sailors apparently are ok with that, Marines are not. I'm willing to bet BK wasn't talking about soldiers of the sea from wherever but more specifically about the US type, namely the Marines. And he consistently writes marines instead of Marines, which is fine with me. I'll keep using Marines or Marine, as a title it should be capitalized, and you do as you please, and the name callers may keep their little game going to... ;) Kids.

And you call yourself a Marine, oh wait,,,,, you can be a "marine" the rest of us will stick with Marine!

The word "Marine" when used as a title is indeed capitalized. The same with any title. The fact that you put "U.S." in front of it simply describes the specific origin or type of Marine. The "U.S." is capitalized because it's initials just like USMC, SEAL, or SF (both which are names/titles). In addition, "U.S." stands for United States which is the name/title of a country; Not the full title/name mind you but it still qualifies and is therefore correct english. And I thought I wouldn't use all that college, ha.

I should send you to the sand pit for saying, "marine" you maggot! :bash:

LOL, hey I suppose if you earned the title no matter what it is, you can call yourself whatever you like. After all.... I'm an "A**hole", have the certificate to prove it too. :)

Oh yea, back to the starlight scope...
Here's a better pic of the scope in question. Looks good I suppose. Until I get my nasty hands on one though I'll refrain from speculating as to how effective it is, seems like people like em so far.

I think though, the military should listen to us and work out the bugs on improving the AN/PVS-10. A truly day/night sight should take precidence over one that has to be added on at night and then taken off during daylight. It's simply not nearly as practical as a single peice/day-night integraded sniper scope. Maybe someone will actually ask a Sniper to advice and help design the next generation of day-night scopes. Look how long it took for the Corps to get their new day scopes. Owell, I guess you can't have it both ways. So the add on sight will have to suffice for now.

It's an amazing system...i've examined the UNS version thoroughly on the M14 with their new Smith Enterprise, Inc. PVS-22 mount. Just all around neat system. Yeah a truly integrated, small and robust day-night system would be tops, but we're not there yet.
