who has bought JAS 39 Grippen as foreign buyers? Because the cost of consortiums building Typhoon, Tornado, EuroFighter and so on have blown out. How has Sweeden done this cost effectively or have they run at a cost, to the greater benefit of the country?

Well. In terms of costs this has been Swedens largest single industrial project,
the costs have been estimated to about 100 billion Swedish Kr, which is something
like $13 billion US dollars. There is two main problems with the plane, first that in
example US can always sell their planes cheaper, also US can pressure countries
to buy American. Secondly the timing is somewhat off, in example Brazil was
interested in buying Gripen but well, they didnīt want to spend that much money
on a fighter, the cold war is over. So basically, the Swedish taxpayers have paid
a lot for the plane. The export costumers so far:

http://imagebase.saab.se/ibsaab/file/saab/Dig0/Dig02908/low/Dig02908.jpg
Gripen in Hungarian colours, they have ordered 14. Also Czech Republic
have ordered 14 Gripen. First NATO costumers.

http://imagebase.saab.se/ibsaab/file/saab/Dig9/Dig99155_J/low/Dig99155_J.jpg
South African Gripen over Cape town, they have ordered 28

The Swedish Air Force have ordered 204 Gripen. However, I think that 28 of
these are going to be leased to Hungary and Czech Republic. Not sure though.

I doubt it, since that would be a hell of a lot of airplanes. Rememer that SAAB
have been building them since the second world war. But here is atleast one:

Yeah, there are a couple of funny stories about pilots landing on the wrong roads during the major excercises in the 80s and 90s...

Can I ask a semi serious question?

Why is it Saab in Sweden can make some of the most bitchin' looking aircraft ever made......they're frickin beautiful...especially for such a teeny, tiny little country

But Saab cars are so poop looking?

You need to stop building so many cool planes and cars for housewives....and start building cars for people who party like rockstars

Sort it out!

Well, I think SAAB is working on a new sports model that will eb something extra.

My impression fo the business is that no matter what the car looks like, the difference between it looking "AWESOME!!!" and "OMFG, it looks like ****" is whether its a BMW or a SAAB, the brand is all that counts it seems.

Well SAAB Automotive is owned by GM, so SAAB the airplane maker and SAAB the car maker are two different companies.

And by tradition up until today, SAAB has made cars that appeal to only a small part of the market. Today we are starting to see more mainstream models being introduced in SAABs model line, like the 9-3 SportSedan and the upcomming 9-2X and 9-7X. When GM bought SAAB they decided that the small Swedish auto-maker could continue to build their cars like they had before, but the negative results every year has now forced GM to make "fake" SAABs, SAABs that will be attractive to a broader part of the market. A prime example of this budget-cutting is the new 9-2X, which is in fact a badged Subaru Imprezza Sport Wagon, it even has the same boxer engines as the Subaru, SAAB has never ever ever had boxer engine before.

Me, I like SAAB, but I'm Swedish so what do I know. I'm actually considering a 9-5 Sedan as my next car,
