The completed Gravity Probe B space vehicle during solar array installation is shown in this undated publicity photograph. The space vehicle is part of NASA (news - web sites) and Stanford University's Gravity Probe B experiment to test Einstein's theory of relativity. The experiment will precisely check tiny changes in the axis of spin of four gyroscopes contained in an Earth satellite orbiting at 400-mile altitude directly over the poles. So free are the gyroscopes from disturbance that they will provide an almost perfect space-time reference system. They will measure how space and time are warped by the presence of the Earth. The probe will be launched from Vandenberg Air Force base in California.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- A Delta II rocket launched from here April 20. The rocket carried the Gravity Probe-B experiment, a project between NASA and Stanford University to test Einstein's theory of relativity. The experiment will check tiny changes in four gyroscopes on a satellite orbiting 400 miles directly above Earth's poles. Scientists will use the experiment to measure how space and time are warped by Earth's presence. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Craig Cisek)
