View Full Version : Air action videos over the Aegean Sea

Although not many people know it, the airspace over the Aegean sea is daily the theatre for some of the most ferocious mock dogfights in the world today, between Greek and Turkish pilots (*see note at the bottom).
Here are some HUD videos from greek F-16s and Mirage 2000

Here's a HUD video from a turkish F-16

Here's a "scramble" of two greek F-16s on "readiness" duty, taking off to intercept turkish aircraft.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1QtxWqbNoQ

But there's more to it than dogfights. Here's some footage of low flying Phantoms and Corsairs during air-to-ground training

*Note: This is not intended to start a flame war, just to give some info for third parties: Disputes between Greece and Turkey regarding the Aegean airspace refer to two points: (a) national airspace and (b) FIR regulations in international airspace. On (a) the greek position is that greek airspace is 10 miles, while the turkish side only accepts 6 miles as greek airspace. On (b) Greece treats all aircraft entering the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) (which includes all of the Aegean) without submitting flight plans according to ICAO as unidentified intruders, scrambling fighters to intercept them. The turkish position is that military aircraft flying in international airspace are not obliged to submit flight plans. I hope this was objective enough.

Why is the frequency hidden from the HUD?

there is a very nice pic of a Greek F16 intercepting a Turkish F4 published by the newspaper VIMA back in 1996(?) I can't find it in my archives, anybody?

You mean the HUD view taken from the THK F-4's 6 o'clock low? I remember such a photo, but I don't have it.

Why is the frequency hidden from the HUD?

So that whatever unauthorized person (like you and me - and I can think of worse cases!) sees the photos, will not immediately know the RF channels used my the HAF in these situations!...

I guess it is; but even if it wasn't, covering the frequencies still makes good sense.

Are you talking about this one? But that's not from the HUD and I don't think it's from an interception.

As far as I remember the HUD symbols were photoshoped over the photo of the F-4 which was propably taken through a hand held camera:)

By the way, if you liked the low flying greek Phantom ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PF8A11AWTY), you might want to check out this old thread http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=94294
that I started with it. No more greek airplanes, but just about every low flying video from youtube is in there! Amazing stuff, for instance those two videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7DM_RXm6Z0&mode=related&search=

That pilot did a fair approximation of a sea-skimming ASM woot

speaking of pilots skill do we have a link to the story when a Mirage 2000 pilot landed the malfuctioned Mirage on a railway? it was about 1992-3?

It was in 1991, the pilot's name was Tzanavaras. A Lt. Col. at the time, he managed to air-glide his Mirage 2000 from Skyros, where his engine stopped, all the way to Tanagra airport, but didn't quite make it to the runway, so instead he chose the railway lines nearby and ejected at the last moment. I think he's a general now, in charge of Aviation Training. The only link I found is this, it doesn't say much though
http://www.ejection-history.org.uk/PROJECT/YEAR_Pages/1991.htm
A similar incident happened in 2005, when a young second lieutenant fresh from aviators School (name not disclosed) managed to air-glide and land his F-16 in Limnos, about 10 miles away from where his engine had failed
