In this photo provided by the Department of Defense, a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle pilot and weapon systems officer from the 4th Fighter Wing prepare their aircraft for take off at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Jan. 3, 2007. The side of the aircraft has a picture of Gerald R. Ford as a Michigan football center with the phrase, ''Hail to the Victors Valiant. President Ford 1913-2006.'' Ground crews for 21 F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets painted the the art on the nose of eight planes as a tribute for the flyover at Gerald R. Ford's funeral in Michigan.

Touching.
For the missing man formation, does the plane the pulls up, does that signify the missing man going to heaven? Or is it just the missing man in the formation?
I've always interpreted the the jet that pulls away in the missing man formation as symbolising the final moments of one of our own with us, before leaving us for the final time.
Great vids and pics. I thought it was aprox. 12 jets--I had no idea it was 21.
