Nope, in the story, a T-62. For real a T-55. :)

Apart from the hatch it's also "extra" equiped with flamethrower and some sort of motion detector. Good film though.

One of the worst parts of the movie is where the main character repairs the afghani's RPG with a mysterious part from under the rear sight of a Lee Enfield No1. - pretty cheesy...

IIR it is a Israeli TI-67 ( Originally T-55). It has a 105mm L7 gun and centurion stowage boxes. Atleast every German tank is equipped with an escape hatch underneath. Don't know about the rest.Except for the Merkava, that is in the rear. It is a real B##ch to exit a tank that way...
That flamethrower-engineer-chemical warfare-battle-tank was quite funny.
Soviets EVIL!!!
BTW bottom hatch is standard on all soviet tanks since T-34. Infact it's pretty useful to escape disabled tank under enemy fire or evacuate a wounded by driving over him and pulling him inside. However on autoloader tanks it's not easy to access.

Its alright, ahahah Manny from Scarface as a Afghan doesn't really seem believable to me.
Other then that its not bad, Its funny how perspective changes in a mere 20 years, I mean these guys would all be "Insurgents" or "Terrorists" by todays standards.

Have you ever tried it on a non autolaoder tank? Still a B##ch!!! On the Leopard 2 you have to remove the backsupport before you can exit.:-(

Hehe, Tanks without infantry. I would have believed it, if the tankers were the suicide type of guys, but they weren't.
My favorite "evil soviets" movie along with "Red Dawn".:)

It's an entertaining film. I enjoy it.
The tank combat effects are possibly the most realistic I've seen in a film involving armour.

That's what I'm getting at. There's a fairly common photo of a Russian soldier (could be from a Spetznaz unit) firing a newly arrived GP25 attached to an AKMS on the range.

esspecially assault units were equippied with AK 74s...l heve never seen any picture AK47 equipped soviet soldiers in the afganistan..maybe non combat units reserve units or native afgan units could be equiiped ak47s...

it is sittng literally like two feet above my head at my desk. i absolutely loved it. I agree best "evil soviets" movie along with Red Dawn.
I found it interesting how the one guy that has a problem with just about everything the TC does has a pretty extensive service record. But again I loved and will probably watch it this weekend.

You can set the russian type (forgot what type) handgrenade to a zero second delay. So it explodes instantly. In Bosnia they used to saw off the handle(don't know the correct name) pull the pin but hold the handle and put it BACK in the plastic transport cups.If you would open a transport cup I would explode immediately. They would leave a few with abandoned equipment and they would be sure that nobody would touch anything, but them. Easy, very cheap and relatively safe (for their own guys). But according to the Geneva covention it is forbidden.

Originally it is not, but it is easy to do, that is why it is forbidden by the Geneva convention. When I was in Bosnia, a sergeant from the AFBih EOD showed me the trick and explained me the way they used it.
The greatest mistake was soviet tanks attacking a village without infantry support (LOL), exiting their tanks in the middle of the battle (LOL), use some sort of "chemical weapon smoke grenade" (LOL), take flamethrowers, satchel charges and RPGs out of their tanks (and they had even place for 5th crewman, T-62 rulez).
And to complete the "Soviets EVIL vs Jihadist NOBLE" image, in the best tradition of middle-age witch trials, even poison the well rofl.
BTW in the 80s Soviets already replaced traditional flamethrowers with RPO-A thermobaric launchers (but the designation still remained flamethrower)

I think one of the biggest flaws in the opening scene is the tank commander riding in a gas mask, he would simply drown in his sweat riding in a gas mask in an unairconditioned tank in a desertrofl
But he does look evil in the gas mask, and i guess that was the main point that the director tried to get across:)

We train to dig defensive positions in that heat in full NBCD gear including MOPP suits and masks.
It's a fun movie, not to be taken too seriously. I kind of liked the hard-driving sargent/officer character, he seemed to be the only one who knew what the score was.p-)

I haven't been in the desert with the Leo( I'm not canadian!!!) but last summer it was 35 degrees C, and yes, I had my gas mask on, and yes, it is very hot, because we don't have an ac unit ( It is coming!!!). But that is just the way it is.
Another poster of that movie. Looks a bit more dramatic.

One of those AP mines I can think of is the POM-Z, which sort of looks like an old Mk.1 pineapple grenade with a stick. Great movie, think the funny part is when they go overkill on all those deer after the night ambush scene.

This RDG5 Soviet grenade can be fused to instant, ie zero seconds delay. They were still in service in Cambodia in the 1990's.

Good post, I was looking for the full version of this film not long ago and Google, and Youtube.
Now only if I could find the "9th Company" for free on Google, that would be nice.
I have this one on DVD. There is a Russian movie about the Afghan war with an Italian actor the guy who is the detective in the Italian tv show called Octopus or ekhtaput something. I saw part of that movie when I was in Afghanistan and then the Taliban cut power to kabul so I couldnt see the second half. I think the movie is called Afghan break down I dont remember the Russian name. Anyway, if our Russian freinds can help a little that would be great. Its the movie with Comissar Kantani in it.
