people have been talking about the draft being brought back...my question is, assuming, if there was a draft, and they ran it the same way as the one during Vietnam, how do you know where you stand, as far as being picked or not? like how do you know if you got a high or low number?

That's an example of the lottery system, it was done quite differently prior to the establishment of that system as I recall. Although...maybe I'm mistaken...
Edit: D'oh...didn't read carefully enough.

Instituting a draft would be "political suicide." it would take at least a year, probably two,
before the conscripted troops would be ready to fight. The talk of a draft is IMHO a ploy
by Democrats to get some political leverage; “stoke” everybody up..”no, no, you mean I
might have to actually take an interest in what is happening in the world…no, no”.
The anti-war movement in the 60’s used the fact that conscription was unfair (it was, look
at how easy it was to get a deferment). It’s ripe for causing political and social upheaval,
ahhh, just in time for the election.

There will be no draft. Quote it, bank it and believe it.

251, phew. So if I ever get dropped through a wormhole into 1969 and someone fakes me some US ID without my knowledge, I'll be safe.

I've heard a few folks talking about insituting a draft in the US. I highly doubt it will happen. If needed, we could just relocate troops from Germany, and Korea to fight if needed. I don't think it's a democratic ploy, but I think that one of the reason that the US Military is so effective is due to the volunteer system. Not to put down conscription, but I think that what makes the US military somewhat unique is the volunteer system.

I don't think it's a democratic ploy

The reason I mentioned a Democratic ploy is because the two leading proponents of reinstituting the draft
comes from Reps. Charles Rangel of New York (D) and John Conyers of Michigan.(D) See below link:

You're right, if needed troops would be deployed from Germany and Korea.

I enlisted in 1965 to avoid the draft ;)

The old Army Security Agency was the only branch in existence at the time that consisted of only volunteers (due to lengthy training).

Before the lottery was established, it was up to the local draft board to determine who went and who didn't.

Damn I woulda been so close. :) well I guess it woulda been towards the end of the war so I would have stood a better chance of coming home alive. Course I would have enlisted in the navy anyways.... Always did like the water more.

What the US would benefot from, isn't a draft, but rather conscription. Its what the Norwegians, Israelis and Koreans (among others) do. You hit age 18, you serve. Offer National Service options for those "opposed" to military service. It'd be cheaper too.
