Not really, you can be suprisingly close to the intakes with no ill effects on either the engine or the person. For instance, six inches would be a good minimum distance.

its where they are supposed to sit and it's not like they are holding on with their hands either, they are attached to the helicopter, the air intake couldn't suck them in even if it wanted to

Yup, as our resident rotor-head AlphaOneSix mentioned in that thread, no attachment required, they're just sitting on the bird.
