I pay about 6 cents for every dollar, or simply 6%

ooouch...
for 1000$ a month the taxes are low..(~10-15%)
it gets higher as the salary rises...starting from 16,000 shekels (~3500$) its 45% (which is the top)
+ health + "national insurance"=50-60% :cantbeli:
a 100,000 shekels a month salary = 40,000 in the bank (I once calculated to have an idea how sad will it be if I'll ever be rich)
1$=4.5 shekels now

Finland has 22% "goods and services" tax. it sucks, but the worst thing is with cars and fuel something like 50-70%.

Yeah! That 6% was a "milk through the nose"-kinda moment. Americans simply doesn't know what taxes are. We also pay 23% VAT when buying stuff. Except on some food items where we only have 12%.
AmI complaining...? No.
VAT (we call it BTW here) is 19% on luxury goods, but I believe it's only 4 on food and stuff. They're taxing the **** outta cigarettes and gas though. Either way I'm not complaining (also because I don't pay it yet), but you get something back for what you pay.

You have a flat tax in Russia and parts of Eastern Europe(Latvia,Lithuania,Estonia) right?
If that's the case, I reckon the economy will EXPLODE with that simple tax policy.......freeing up all that money to build business rather than feed government.....you guys are likely looking at good economic years ahead.
We've got 33% corporate tax
BUT zero capital gains or wealth tax:
Which means no tax on property or stock market profits...ever!
Something to cheer about at least....

I don't wanna cry over the prices on cigarettes and tobacco here in Norway. But to share some light over the prices so you have some comparising.
20 cigarettes, cost 62 N.Kr. That is about $ 8.90
Tobacco, 50 grams that I prefer cost about 150 N.Kr. That is about $ 21.50.
Ain't sure how much of that is taxes and stuff, but it feels like it is 99%. rofl
At least, unlike in Sweden, you still have affordable alcohol.

At least I always heard Sweden was the country with the insane alcohol prices, and that the rest of Scandinavia has pretty normal prices. Of course I could be wrong.... but hey, at least you're still alowed to club baby seals for sports. :D

That is why we club baby seals. To get some steam off. Get rid of the anger.
People in Norway, that live close to the Swedish boarder, take trips over there to bye cheap alcohole. But with my "1 bottle, maaaaybe a year." The prices doesn't bother me. And I maybe drinking 2-3 bottles of beer each year, so I don't care for that either.
You go to Sweden for cheap alcohol?! Geez...and every Swede I know always goes abroad for his cheap alcohol. :D

Norwegians buy their stuff in Sweden, Swedes go to Denmark, Danish people go to Germany.
Been like this for years now.
Since income-tax is based on income in some countries it might be wise to compare avergae salary-levels.
The set level (changed up and down then along with acctual income-level) is 33% in my region. Every region can decide on their own.

So you actually think that the government taking more money away from you is good...?
It is when the money is well spent. In case you haven't noticed; there's more about life than what you've got in your purse.

Do you care about the efficiency of that money in government hands? It's like 20 cents on the dollar efficient or less. That's absolutely horrible when you consider that individuals are ~100 cents on the dollar efficient with their money. Individuals know how to spend their money. You don't need government to do that for you.

My federal "effective tax rate" for 2003 was 19.96%. I paid about 6% in state income tax, and then we pay 4.5% sales tax here in Virginia (I'm sure higher for booze, cigs and gasoline). All in all, we pay low taxes. And in case you're wondering, I'm in a very high income bracket -- the US is cool because they let us (for the most part) do what we want with our money. I also put in as much as possible into my 401k (retirement plan), which lowered my taxable income.
Thank you very much Bush for the tax cuts on dividends and capital gains!

I see. No, never heard of them. My nickname comes from where I attended college: the University of Michigan, whose mascot is the wolverine, and whose colors are maize (you may know it as yellow or corn rofl ) and blue. We say stupid things like, GO BLUE! to Ohio State fans, who are big losers, by the way.

Wow -- here comes an ideological battle. Haiw -- f*** the govt and them taking my money. The federal govt's only job is to protect us. Our local and state govt's deal with education, infrastructure, etc. (with help from the fed govt)...Americans give billions a year in charity, and plus, our welfare system is so f****d up that many people live on the dole without looking for a job and have a life better than a lot of hard-working people.

Syracuse? Yeah, that sucked. My mom went to Syracuse, and so she came over to my house here in Virginia to watch the game on TV...nearly killed her when McNabb scored a TD after his shoe had fallen off. She and I went up to SU for the game the next year, which U-M won, of course :P
