It still amazes me how people can stand around and take pictures but are unable to take action when some one is in trouble. If I was that photographer I would have some real soul searching to do.

I still haven't found a link in english, but according to brasilian newspapers, the driver of the photographer and a couple residents helped the woman and the kid get out of the hole. But you are correct - no professional 'mission or instinct' shoud have stoped this photographer from helping them.

what enemy positions? these soldiers are out there to stop the riots, not to fight an army.

If you have a heavy weapon, why not take it.
because its heavy, clumsy and most of all - lethal. unfit for confronting civilians (unless they have some sort of non-lethal ammo for that cannon, which I doubt ).
they will never use it against protestors just as you dont pull out a gun when you want to get rif of flies.

Israeli TV showed video from the protests in Lebanon. It amazes me that some of the local population is fighting its own army.

My guess is that if things get downright ugly, there are mainly two options: One, history repeats itself and Lebanon plunges again into civil war and Two, the same thing that happened in Romania back in '89 happens in Lebanon as well, i.e. the Army sides with the protesters and helps overthrow the government.

I always admired the simplicity of Chinese high rank officers uniforms. Sounds like a statement: "I AM powerfull, so I just don´t need to look powerfull".

In other countries the top brass would have to borrow their ADCs chests if they want to wear all the ribbons and medals...

That's right; the original and quintessential assault rifle development using an intermediate rifle/pistol round with select fire and pressed steel mass production capability that was finally matched and surpassed with the development of the AKM in the 50's.

I believe it was Hitler who coined the phrase Assault Rifle (StG - sturmgewehr) after it's secret development cloaked as a machine pistol.

The 106mm is perfect against bunkers and fortified buildings and it's not a big threat against Israeli armor so I think it's a nice choice.

I remember one of the Lebenese MP.net members saying that most of the soldiers in the Lebenese army are shia and thats why the Lebenese army would never fight the Hezbullah. that was a surprise to me because I thought shia's would rather join the Hezbullah's ranks.

AlQaeda group? what AlQaeda group?
I thought they were trying to stop the violance between Hezbullah supporters and the goverment's supporters.
I'd take tear gas grenaders and those trucks with water cannons if I was confronting my own countrymen.

And there we have the lebanese problem, there is no riot police in Lebanon, they have no gummy sticks and no water cannons. Maybe that is a good goal for the aid that is given now. Train the military/police in riot control, and supply them with the right tools to do so. Though when the students start firing rifles they need to be shot at too off course, maybe some rubber bullets would do them good.
The major problem in that region is teh violence between Sunnits and Shiïts, that needs to be stopped in Lebanon, Irak, Iran, Saudi Arabia, The Palestinian areas, Afghanistan and so further...... so a big peace conference which tries to solve the regional problem in whole would be a good idea.

A Jund al-Sham militant holds a gun as Lebanese and Palestinian people watch during an exchange of fire with the Lebanese army outside the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp near the southern port of Sidon, Lebanon Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007. Islamic militants on Thursday fired mortars and rocket-propelled grenades at Lebanese troops as they deployed outside a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, wounding a soldier and two civilians and forcing hundreds of residents to flee, security officials said.

Jund al-Sham

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#column-one), search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#searchInput)
Jund al-Sham (Arabic جند الشام, "The Greater Syrian Army") is believed to have first appeared in Afghanistan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghanistan) in 1999, the group was established by Syrians and Palestinians with links Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Musab_al-Zarqawi),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#_note-ABC) who went on to found al-Qaida in Iraq and subsequently killed by a US airstrike. According to European Intelligence documents and Jordanian government sources, Zarqawi set up the camp with $200,000 in startup money he received from Osama bin Laden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osama_bin_Laden).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#_note-ABC) The camp near Herut was named Al Matar Training Camp and taught the jihadists techniques in guerrilla warfare, explosives and chemical weapons. It is believed the group left after its base of operations was disrupted by the War in Afghanistan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_war_in_Afghanistan) to oust the Taliban (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban) regime. Its first attack came in the summer of 2004 when a car bomb in Beirut exploded, killing a Hezbollah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah) agent. The Syrian security forces have participated in numerous gun battles with the group since then.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#_note-WashingtonPost)

Attacks

The group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing near a British school in Qatar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar) (The Times (London), March 23 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_23), 2005), and/or the name of a Salafi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salafi)-influenced group in the Ein el-Hilweh camp refugee camp near the southern port city of Sidon, Lebanon. Its presence has also been reported in Syria. It has been listed as a terrorist organisation by Russia [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#_note-ArabTimes) It may or may not have any relationship to the "The Strugglers for the Unity and Freedom of al-Sham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strugglers_for_the_Unity_and_Freedom_of_al-Sham)", who in December 2005 claimed responsibility for the assassination of Gibran Tueni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibran_Tueni), and made threats against Detlev Mehlis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detlev_Mehlis).
Amnesty International reports on other attacks as follows:
"Heba al-Khaled, Rola al-Khaled and Nadia al-Satour were arrested on 3 September 2005, following, according to Syrian state media, a gun battle in Hama province, in the west of the country, between the Anti-Terror Squad and militants of the Jund al-Sham ("Soldiers of the Levant") armed group. Five Jund al-Sham members were reportedly killed and two security officers injured. The women were arrested when the security forces were unable to find their husbands, who are allegedly involved with Jund al-Sham. They were first detained in the town of Hama, before being transferred to the Military Intelligence Palestine Branch in Damascus. They were reportedly held as hostages to put pressure on their husbands to give themselves up, even though Heba al-Khaled and her sister Rola al-Khaled were pregnant at the time they were detained, and Nadia al-Satour reportedly had her young baby with her."
On May Day, 2006, Jund al-Sham reportedly fought with Fatah in the Ein el-Hilweh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ein_el-Hilweh) camp. One Palestinian bystander, Mohammed Tayssir Awad, 20, was killed by a stray bullet. The Associated Press reported: "A Fatah official in the camp, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said the fighting began when Jund al-Sham gunmen tried to assassinate Mahmoud Abdul-Hamid Issa, a Fatah military official, as he walked with his bodyguards. One of the bodyguards, Abu Omra al-Aswad, was seriously wounded, the official said."
On September 12 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_12), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006), armed militants reportedly linked to Jund al-Sham attempted to storm the US Embassy in Damascus. The four attackers were armed with hand grenades and automatic rifles, as well as a van rigged with explosives. Three of the attackers were killed and one wounded; a Syrian anti-terrorism officer was also killed in the battle.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jund_al-Sham#_note-WashingtonPost)

If you speak arabic there is video about Jund Al Sham's plan watch it. They clearly state what they want and how to get it. There was an aljazeera documentary on them, and the reporter asked their leader directly "Are you AlQaeda" and the reply was "yes". AlQaeda is an ideology but at the same time its all these smaller organizations. Zarqawi's group was independant and later became part of alqaeda. Jund Al Sham were all close to bin laden, they were in afghanistan, and they returned to "bilad al sham" to start the organization there.

If you don't mind me asking whats your expertise on the subject?

BPEL,
I can understand frustration at a government who cares more about a certain elite than the people, we have a kind of similar problem here (not in the same extend thought)
On the other hand, how could Hezballah possibly change the situation?
I mean, this government is just the extension of all the other governments since the Taef agreement, agreements that sold Lebanon to Syria in exchange for a "peace", or I'd rather say, calm before the next tempest.
I might be utterly wrong, but I'm afraid Lebanon will never be able to get out of the current turmoil as long as Syria and Hezballah continue to stir shyte at every possible occasion.
The "peace process" there seems to have been only a kind of long term cease fire, because all the factions were tired, and international intervention prevented anyone to take a clear advantage. So the core reasons for turmoil there haven't been solved.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm afraid last summer's war just triggered what will turn out to be the beginning of the next round, and unfortunately, non islamic forces may have the most to loose.

what enemy positions? these soldiers are out there to stop the riots, not to fight an army.

because its heavy, clumsy and most of all - lethal. unfit for confronting civilians (unless they have some sort of non-lethal ammo for that cannon, which I doubt ).
they will never use it against protestors just as you dont pull out a gun when you want to get rif of flies.

Israeli TV showed video from the protests in Lebanon. It amazes me that some of the local population is fighting its own army.

With the exception of the helmets they look fairly squared away. All in the same uniform/webbing, M-16's, M-113's. It's just too bad they can't do a damn thing about Hezzbulla.

It's a shame alright, but if the Israelis have difficulty squashing them, what chance do the Lebanese have
