Report: Trains Explode in North Korea

By SANG-HUN CHOE, Associated Press Writer

SEOUL, South Korea - As many as 3,000 people were killed or injured Thursday when two trains carrying oil and liquefied petroleum gas collided and exploded in a North Korean train station, South Korean media reported.

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, reportedly had passed through the station as he returned from China hours earlier, South Korea (news - web sites)'s all-news cable channel, YTN, reported.

The number killed or injured could reach 3,000, YTN said.

"The area around Ryongchon station has turned into ruins as if it were bombarded," South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted witnesses as saying. "Debris from the explosion soared high into the sky and drifted to Sinuju," a North Korean town on the border with China, the agency said.

Yonhap, quoting witnesses in the Chinese city of Dandong on the border with the North, said the explosion occurred about 1 p.m. at Ryongchon. It said Kim passed through nine hours earlier, returning to Pyongyang. Ryongchon is about 12 miles from the Chinese border.

Yang Jong-hwa, a spokeswoman of South Korea's Unification Ministry, said her organization could not immediately confirm the reports. The ministry is in charge of relations with North Korea (news - web sites).

The Defense Ministry likewise was not commenting.

"We are aware of the news reports, but we will not make any comments at this stage," said a spokesman, speaking on customary condition of anonymity.

YTN reported that the causalities included Chinese living in the North Korean border region, and that Chinese in Dandong were desperate to learn about their relatives.

Some of the injured were evacuated to hospitals in Dandong, it said.

Chinese and North Korean traders frequently cross the border at Dandong, a bustling industrial city on Yalu River.

North Korea's state-run news agency on Thursday confirmed that Kim had made a secretive trip to China on Monday through Wednesday, but carried no comments on the reported explosion.

Go f*** yourself, Pinkeye. I know you're comparing this to 9/11, but unfortunately this was just an accident involving two trains. We were attacked on 9/11 by terrorists, and if you think we're just going to take it and ignore terrorism, you are f***ing wrong. :fork:

Take it easy there Seoul, I think he was just pointing out the potentially large number of victims. Unless you read something I didn't, it was just a news report and not a comparison to 9/11. :|

Emphasis added by pinkeye for possibly two reasons:

1) Pointing out how many people died because it is so tragic
2) Pointing out how many people died because the US is freaking out after they lose 3,000 people, yet NK loses 3,000 people instantly, so there really isn't a difference.

Because this is coming from Pinkeye, I'll go for the second reason. :|

The Train of the beloved leader passed short time before, maybe no accident.

i pointed that 3000 people lost their lives. think about it, 3000 people died in a train accident... absolutely tragic. yet somehow your little evil peanut of a brain construes this as something else. f%&k you, you whiny little bitch. i have never made any negative comments regarding american loss of life, which i abhor regardless of the circumstances, so just be thankful i am not standing in front of you.

The trip of beloved leader Kim could be the reason for this disaster. Kim is wery paranoid when concerned for his saftey, so for his pasage all railway traffic was halted for several hours and the mix up in timetables could cause the collision.

I just that Pyongjang nut doesn't see this as proof that evil Americans are after him and atacks the South Korea.

Just to point something out, which it seems everyone on this board is missing altogether. None of the reports say there were 3,000 fatalities, but 3,000 casualties. There is a difference.
