They run 10 mph, jump three feet, are a nocturnal spider, so only come out at night unless they are in shade. When they bite you, you are injected with Novocain so you go numb instantly. You don't even know you are bitten when you are sleeping, so you wake up with part of your leg or arm missing because it has been gnawing on it all night long. If you are walking around and you bump something that is casting a shadow over it, and the sun makes contact with it, you better run. It will instantly run for your shadow, and scream the whole time it is chasing you.
PS. The one on the bottom is eating the one on the top. These are Spiders found daily in IRAQ by troops. Imagine waking up and seeing one of these in your tent!!

With the war on, we expected to get searches for different kinds of military hardware. We expected searches for the nations of the Middle East. We expected searches for war news and pictures. But we had a hard time figuring out what was the reason for a very odd term that showed up in the middle of last week: camel spiders.
Looks like this was the big war-related April Fool of 2003. No, there really is such an animal as the camel spider, but its powers of ingestion have been highly exaggerated. An email was going around the Internet last week that claimed that the troops in Iraq were encountering camel spiders and discovering all kinds of amazing facts about the creatures.
They run over 25 miles per hour. They make squealing noises like a child screaming when they scamper about. Worst of all, they are called "camel spiders" because they climb onto the bellies of camels and eat their stomachs from the outside, numbing the flesh by secreting a natural anesthetic. The camels don't even notice until their intestines fall out.
None of which is true.
In reality, camel spiders aren't some mysterious Arabian creature -- we have them in the United States and in Mexico, where they are called matevenados. They are slightly smaller than the human hand, and while they do run quickly, their top speed is 10 miles per hour, not 25. But they also make no noise, they excrete no venom, and although they can be voracious nocturnal predators, they don't eat camels. They eat delicious crickets and pillbugs, and sometimes scorpions.
ok now we know the truth

# Camel spiders are venomous, and their venom contains a powerful anesthetic that numbs their victims (thus allowing them to gnaw away at living, immobilized animals without being noticed). U.S. soldiers were said to have been attacked by camel spiders at night but remained completely unaware of their plight until they awakened in the morning to find chunks of their flesh missing.

I grew up in Niger, West Africa, and we used to see those camel spiders all the time--only there, they called them dung-bari, which literally means "scorpion horse"--"scorpion" because it's the same color as a scorpion, and "horse" because it runs so fast.
Whenever we were sitting around a campfire out in the bush, we had to keep an eye out for those things, because they were attracted to the light, and they would run straight toward the fire--even if it meant crawling over your legs to get there!
They are perfectly harmless, though--unless looks could kill! :)
And no: no "screaming baby" sound!
And no: they don't eat you while your leg is numb!

Cool. I had a dream about that photo.
In the dream I was wanking off and this spider crawled onto me. After I stared at it for a couple of seconds, it said to me telepathically, "I am a camel spider." and then I woke up.

They are neat little critters. Never heard one scream. Keep in mind that arachnidia LACK VOCAL chords, just like they lack teeth, and **** like that.
Anyway, good eating. :bash: p-)

rofl  That's some funny stuff.
If I was a coalition soldier stationed in Iraq I would be more worried of sandflies, I myself am already immune (was bitten as a baby).

In that picture, theres two spiders, both dead anotehr biting (still hanging on) on the first ones rear body.........
Hence the 16 feet, (spiders have only 8........) but still, scary ****.

Actually it should be twenty legs since the Camel Spider has ten legs.
That's why technically they are not spiders...

Thanks, after seeing this post i actully counted the legs on the lower "friend"..... it really has 10 legs.... some weird ****.....
I just assumed that these fellows had 8 (as they supposedly were Camel "Spiders"....... Spiders have 8...) and multiplied it by 2 as there was clearly 2 of them...
But yeah, not 16 but 20 legs! :D

So now here is infallible Hebrew logic at work. In Hebrew those things (Camel Spider) are called akravut. A scorpion is an akrav. Where I lived in Israel, we called the akravut "scorpion killer". Spider doesn't enter the language at all here.
Our rule of thumb was: You find akravuyot (plural) where you find scorpions. Its like spiders and flies. When you see them on the ground they kind of look like scorpions without the claws and tail. I never heard of them getting involved with humans, but the first time I ever saw one, they scared the life out of me. Pretty, no?

Man now I know where James Cameron go the idea for the facegugger in Aliens. Jeezuz....
Oh, and whats that fly in south American that lays its eggs inside wounded and dying animals and sometimes live humans that then eat there way out and can even kill you somtimes but mostly just leave terrible scars and infections??
I was watching TV a few months ago and was channel surfing when I came across a Discovery Channel " amazing survival story" show.... One of the people was a women who survived a plane crash in the Brazilian jungle and woke up to find hundred of golf ball sized welts all over her body.....They got bigger and bigger as she spent days in jugle trying to find help.. Eventually she passed out on a riverbank and a tribal fisherman happened to come upon her and take her to safety.... The fisherman only ventured up the river about twice per year so she was damn lucky....
Anyway, when she go to hospital they found that the welts were layed by some sort of horrible south American fly that lays eggs inside dead animals and such and then the larvae eat themselves out.... On occassion they lay eggs in sleeping and old humans..... Well apparently these flies thought she was dead and layed hundreds of eggs in her body.. They showed the pics and it was ghastly........ Does anyone know the type of fly? There might be several species that do this but I think this one was by far the worst and most famous version because many people are scarred by them in South America, especially tribesman with little or no access to modern medecine.......??

I remember the first time I encountered one in Iraq. I thought I saw the sand move and I walked closer. Suddenly one of those things comes running at me. I, thinking quickly, let out a "JESUS CHRIST!" and ran onto the M981 ramp and pulled out my bayonet. I stabbed it in half and it started to attack the bayonet! A size 13 boot was to final solution to that problem.
I shot a video of one that we threw onto an ant hill. It didnt win against those numbers though.
Im not scared of RPG carrying Iraqis but Ill jump on a chair to avoid those spiders or mutants or demons or whatever they are! :)

I've seen some creepy creatures (mostly snakes) while walking on the holy grounds, but this thing just looks too dangerous.
For me they look like this huge spiders in some old 3d animation show that I used to watch (it had soldiers that are sent to another planet to fight "the bugs" and they fought cool armored Plasma bugs that shoot blue fireballs out of their ass).
They have that look that say,"if you don't run I gonna jump on your head and suck all your fecking brain out".
P.S. Can they jump?
P.S. Can they jump?
They leap on their prey, but I doubt that they can get over a person's shoe... :)
Probebly if I got out of my home right now and look under some rocks for an hour I will find a few ;)

What do they do if they see a human?
Do what most creatures which are smaller than us would do... Run and look for hiding. That's why I almost fell off my chair when someone wrote that they like to chase people and many other things that had nothing to do with reality
They won't bother you if you won't bother them...
