Page 3 ()

Stories of St George and how he became our national saint are not in short supply.

Legend has it, an evil dragon was terrorising the local population in Beirut (in Lebanon). To satisfy the monster’s hunger for flesh, all the local animals were sacrificed - before the scaly beast turned its attention to the King’s beautiful daughter Cleolinda.

St George came galloping to a last minute rescue, fighting the dragon on foot. The resourceful knight lassoed the beast with Cleo’s girdle and offed it in front of the Lebanese folks.

Others say he was a Roman soldier. Christian George was tortured for his beliefs but refused to bow. He was finally beheaded in Palestine, on (you guessed it!) 23rd April 303AD, and later made a martyr and a saint.

George, one of the busier martyrs, is also Patron Saint of Russia, Bavaria, Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Hungary, Barcelona and, of course, Beirut.

And in true British tradition ;)...

cool

I found this and thought I'd add it

St. George is one of the most popular Christian saints ever to have existed and has been venerated at different times in every Christian tradition, Eastern & Western. He even finds a place too in Islamic Hagiography, that gives him the honoured title of "Prophet".

He is best known as the slayer of the dragon and

saviour of the maiden but, although this story exists in a number of different medieval literary versions and artistic representations, it is without any historical foundation and does not seem to have existed before the 11th century.

There is, in fact, every reason to believe that George was a genuine martyr who suffered at Lydda before the time of Constantine. Indeed, certain accounts record his death to be in the year 307. It is written that George was an officer in the Roman army who, after giving his goods to the poor at the outbreak of persecution, confessing his Christian faith and refusing to sacrifice to the gods, suffered "terrible tortures" which lasted for seven years and was eventually beheaded.

In Jerusalem, a monastery was erected and dedicated to him in the fifth century. Pilgrims in the Holy land between the sixth and eighth centuries speak of Lydda as the main place associated with George's cult (which resulted from his exploits) and final resting place of his relics - although the Coptic Church claims that these were transferred to Egypt and finally placed in the church dedicated to him in Old Cairo.

How he came to be regarded as patron of England is somewhat unclear, but he has been recognised here from at least the eighth century. His act of martyrdom was translated into Anglo-Saxon by Abbot Aelfric (c. 955-1020) and some pre-conquest churches were also dedicated to him (for example at Doncaster in 1061).

In 1222 a national synod at Oxford included a feast in George's honour among their lesser holidays, but it was not until after the battle of Agincourt in 1415 that it was included as one of the major feasts of the year. In 1348, King Edward III introduced the battle cry "St. George for England" and later founded the Order of the Garter, with St. George as it's patron.

George later went on to become patron saint of Venice, Genoa, Portugal and Catalonia and his cult also became strong in Russia and Ethiopia.

aagh, the ever reliable militaryphotos.net forum, i knew i'd find a St George's day thread on here. Happy St. George's Day everyone, the one day when you're allowed to be English, the rest of the time we have to pretend to be Irish or just wallow in middle class guilt and self-loathing about being English.

OK, good start, they are a bit dodgy, but I like the Geordie or Durham accent, especially on a woman.

PS; damn double post, 'no post specified', wtf?

-essex girls have ugly accents

and scousers obviously

other the that as long as they aren't chavs/scallies, you're laughing

aussie women sound like donkeys most of the time, with that bloody annoying aussie intonation crap that means they go up and the end of every sentence, aussie guys can pull it off because they have deeper voices but aussie kids and women sound shrill and really do my head in.

and that's what you get for having a go a pommie accents :P

Unfortunately our spines don't allow us to get the full rectum accent experience, something our English brethren have achieved marvelously.

don't be modest, it's so unlike you! Aussies are world beating again! This time in the amount of their head they can fit into to there rectum. Luckily for them convict-sized brains mean they are head and shoulders above the rest, unbeatable. If you listen carefully you can hear waltzing matilda going all the way along the body form belly to.. well belly.

Needless to say it was a very patriotic night.
