Their probly just training and familiarizing themselves. The U.S. does the same with Russian made weapons (AK-47).

I think 16 Obr Spn talked about how he shot from an M16 back when he was in the Soviet Army. I'm sure there were weapons recovered from dead US Soldiers in Vietnam that were given to the USSR.

I remember seeing a pic in the book, where soviet GRU specnaz operators in Afganistan ride toyotas, have everything afganistanised or westernised equipment except the AK-74. Damn that was a good pic.

yeah, talk about co-incidence!....VNV and VDV using both soviet and western weapons....guess that kindof legitimizes my use of VNV woot j/k

Actually, they got rather more from warehouses in south vietnam after the US forces withdrew. There was all sorts of stuff, including Huey helicopters and cessna jets, and of course lots and lots of rifles and other items of military equipment.

yeah i was about to comment on that....a lot of the equipment probably came from ARVN personelle and stocks.

I remember seeing a pic of a Russian soldier using an L96. It wasn't for training either. Can't remember for the life of me where i saw it though.
& yes i'm 100% certain it wasn't an SV-98.

Heard someone mention that before... regarding Beslan. Never saw the photos so I couldn't verify whether it was true or not. For all we know the "russian soldier" could have actually been Georgian or from the baltic republics who use western weapons anyway... ie misidentified as being Russian.

what would the baltic countries have to do with Beslan?

If you mean GazB's post, then n-o-t-h-i-n-g:

He said there were photos been made in Beslan picturing Alpha's sniper with AI rifle. And that's true, FSB/GRU/MVD snipers have AI & SAKO rifles in their arsenal.
But the very essence of his post is that someone can easily confuse "Russian soldier with Georgian or from the baltic republics".

Here is the photo of GRU specnaz, with Toyota, I was talking about.Sorry for the quality,it's been made with a mobile phone camera..
It says, this is GRU's 157th Spetsnaz Brigade in Afgan, Paktia province in 1988.They are supposed to be "Caravan hunters".

Mobile ambushes. They used captured vehicles and disguised themselves as mudjahadeen. Moved around the known mudj’s roots, spot caravans, get close, eliminate it. Proved to be a very successful tactic.
Wonder if Spec/ops are using this tactic in Afganistan today?
Edit: it's not 157th Brigade it's Detachment.
Regarding the 1 photo: how do you know they are VDV?

In Poland in 1980's were single models of western weapons, small arms. They were used for training... For me it's normal procedure to train own troops (recon, para and SOF) to use foe's weaponry.

Yea, I thoutgh similarry, that a"brigade" could be too big, it's from english book anyway. Perhaps a good tactic, but are there any known blue on blue incidents with such disguise?
Today talibans are hunted more by the AF, SF usually spots them only (and ussually gets into fight first :) and then call for an air strike). But since SF ride on Toyotas today, there might be smth like that, I dunno, though doubt.
Regarding photo,
perhaps because of the name-"desant"? they don't wear smth from hat you could easilly determine a VDV blokep-) and the shoes seams to be too regular for airborn troops.

Blue on blue would be an unlikely event as they went hunting to the areas where no regular troops to be found, plus I would think it was well coordinated and the patrol’s AO would be restricted for engagement.
As I am looking closer at the picture I see a telnik on one of the troops, so yes there are VDV or Spetsnaz.
