NEW York police have spent four hours talking a semi-naked gay couple down from a tree in Central Park, where they allegedly engaged in lewd acts before hundreds of onlookers.

Police described the two as a 32-year-old man with "feminine breasts", who was and dressed in a purple thong, and a 17-year-old boy in boxer shorts.

It was not immediately clear what motivated the couple to climb the tree - a rare evergreen - but press reports said they had told rescue workers that their families disapproved of their relationship.

Witnesses told police that the couple had engaged in oral *** while in the branches of the tree.

Firefighters set up an inflatable mattress round the trunk of the tree, the park department sent two cherry pickers and several police officers climbed the tree in harnesses.

Initially, the couple kept the officers at bay, threatening to jump if they climbed further.

At one point a policeman handed the 32-year-old a soft drink, which he promptly threw to the ground, shouting: "This is Coke. I wanted vanilla Diet Pepsi."

The couple were admitted to hospital for psychiatric evaluation when they finally ending the standoff.
