SPIE rigging is a technique developed during the Vietnam War by SEAL teams for situations when troops needed to leave a scenario quickly from an area a helicopter couldn’t land.


“Say, for instance, we’re on a ship and there is another ship close by and it gets hit with a missile and the missile is lodged in its side. We need to get to it, but the flight deck is fouled and the helo can’t land. We could use SPIE rigging to get from ship to ship,” said CM1(EOD/SW/AW) Keith Gillmer.
