The book is accurate. War plain and simple.
There are some moments which I doubt (especially about the Bank), but overall it is a good read.

I have read it , and i have been talled the next things about the book :
1)He writes about storm of Dudayev pallace , and the battle inside. When in reallity the palace was abandoned by Chechen combatans , and there was no fight inside.
2) The way he writes a book , makes him look more like a soldier , then an officer (what he claimes to be ) .
3) It said that the book was written , as a personal bad feelings of author towards Russian leadership behavior in the conflict . So he falsifies several matter inside his memuars .
Never the less , the book is very interesting , and insightfull .

makhra a nickname for the Russian infantry
Whats this in English?

ok thanks Javehn
anyone know makhra?
anyone know makhra?
I think makhra is derived from russian word mahorka, which means very cheap and crappy tobacco. It seems that infantry is called makhra due to their expendability.
I might be wrong thou.

In the book it explains that they were Siberian "makhra" (basically they figured they were expendable). From there attitude they seem like conscripts, and they have a deep resent for any sorta Russian special forces.

Shut, **** up. I have served there. With 16th motor Infantry from 2001 to 2002. This is bul****, entertaining to the reader but bul**** to a servicemen. If you have any questions about me or any of my equipment. Ask?? Makhra means cheap but of very capable tobacco. It is what the rebels called us. We call them Dushmani, or Duki which mean ghosts or spirit.

If you are in a conflict area you get time taken from your military contract. Ask me anything about the rifle or my equipment. I had one friend who tripped a mina which took his foot. He gets a pension now for taking injury. He was very good man. Anybody who has been battle is a changed person. You see some terrorist ambush your convoy carrying supplies to a base trying to shoot at my people I ****ing get mentally unstable and use a Grenade from my Obuvka normal VOG-25 and fire in semi with Kalashnikov at terrorist until he and his followers down. I cannot say confirmed kills because a soldir neveer does.

The clip ,
Mironov's book is fictional at best. I seriously doubt that he was anywhere near the combat zone. His book incorporates several widely-known yet empirically unsuported "legends" such as that bit about "Dudayev and a sniper team", "Attack on the Dudayev's palace" and "DDT's Yuri Shevchuk's visit to the combat zone". I heard all three of those separtly, in no particular order or relation to each other. I heard those stories as a civilian in Krasnodar in 1994-1997. To further support my opinion that Mironov is full of ****, I can bring your attention to the fact that he never identified the regiment he belonged to or names of his immediate commanders that he hated so bad. All he said is that he was a part of "Siberian infantry". I see that as a cheap stunt to attract ignorant foreign reader. The reader for whom Russia is the land of "muzhik", "medved" and "samovar". Siberia is not a city or a village... its a landmass the size of the continental U.S. To say that one is from "Siberian Infantry" is to say that he never served a day of his life.
Mind you, neither did I. Stated above is my opinion based on prolonged research and concurring opinion of authoritative people from ViF2ne. I stand to be corrected if any of you can come up with EVIDENCE to support Mironov's bull****.

As i said before - even if it's complete fiction i enjoyed the book.
Guderian wrote in his book about polish cavalrymen attacking tanks with sbares and lances - it is complete BS - but it doesn't mean that book is worth nothing.
Point taken. But wouldnt you agree that when person writes fiction about a subject and later sells/misprepresents it as the truth to the point when it takes veterans and historians weeks to decypher his lies - we can say that such author is a fraud? Be is Guderian or Mironov. They claimed their books to be memouars, while in actuality they are fiction...
By no means a sermon... it just rubs me the wrong way. Reminds me that "buyer beware" applies to literature as well.

I've talked to Mironov personally many times. He confirmed to me that if he would write everything how it was, it would be only 5-6 pages. He was asked to be more dramatic, and descriptive towards everything he did. THere is some fiction to the storry, but which book doesn't have it? But over all it is the truth. He's not the only friend of mine who stormed Grozny in January 95.
I know a lot more people, and they all shared similar storries.
As for "mahra" -
Yes mahra also means tobaco, but tobaco has nothing to do with the name. When you add 2 words together Motostrelkovaya Pehota, the word mahra came to mind. Its old, and was since the WW2.
The Clip you served with 16 Motor Infnatry what? Division? Regiment? Company?

Ridavoi Alexi Maximov nas nozeevali "zeloni cherti" Green Devils. Sestnatstoie motornaya Pyhota. I have photos but no scanner. I wore camo called "Flora." wore a bandana or Balaklava, winter Balas are easy to get. Steal them from rebels who used them to take hostages. Commander was Capitan Dima Ivanov. When rebels attacked they were mostly explosives. They cannot shoot a rifle properly, their elbow is above the shoulder when hand is on the pistol grip!!!! Eyobane!!! If you have question about the rifle AK-74M or uniform and asault vest?? When they fire a shot they shout "Allah Akbar." Guys in my unit said "Zadkneese Musulmanskaya zaraza." Explosives is their primary weapon, being under fire not as bitg threat as explosives. I always have my AK on semi or OD, last setting to thwe bottom. Scum are cowards and deserve death. :-*$ We were taught to strip the AK in 5 seconds fully. To assamble is 10 seconds but you can still go into cambat without the top reciever but it makes rifle look bad. Top reciever is diddicult to put back on when in hurry.

Clip,

bro,
speaking of your guys.
I always had major respect for you guys, and would put a bottle on a table if I ever meet you to tell you THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU ALL DID. You accomplished miracles in the first war, and we are proud of you guys forever. My kids sure will know about you with pride.
But one tragic note comes to my mind is the 370th separate unit of your brigade.
Am I correct that on the 14th of January '95 the 370th unit was killed, when they were sleeping in the building near the hospital in Grozny? The animals blew up the whole building with explosives without even knowing that your guys were there?
I'm not sure about the exact number of casualties, but I think some 13 officers were killed?
I always wanted to know the details about it, because those guys spent the entire day fighting, and died as HEROES.
Could you tell me more about this night?
Thanks brother
