^Its the strongest helo in the world, in terms of how much weight it can carry.

Even though Chavez isn't exactly the greatest guy on the planet (as far as U.S. relations go that is), I have to agree with his choice of choppers, the Mi-26, and the Mi-35M two awsome helicopters.

Did it come with some "free samples" on board?
Such is usually the practice when similar things are exported ... from cars to furniture.

The only problem I have with a helicopter like this is really its size. Helicopters are more fragile and have a higher failure rate than aircraft. Because this helicopter is so big you are in a sense putting quite a few eggs in one basket. In 2002 a Mi-26 was shot down by Chechens and in that crash 127 Russians were killed.

Nice helicopter, the Venezuelan standard Olive-green is growing on me daily.

Darn, when everyone else orders Russian stuff it takes forever to come. The Venezuelan's order some stuff last year-and get it same year

Looks like a C130 fuselage with a rotor;same cockpit layout as an MI-8/17,same instrumentation, the seats in the cockpit even look the same and probably just as uncomfortable...

Those free samples onboard are the main rotor blades, tail rotor blades and support gear that come with the delivery of any helo to it's destination, this like the MI-17 and MI-17-V5 are great helicopters and will get you the most for your dollar.....

Of course Venezuela needs them to counter Guyana's transport capabilities p-)

We know the Mi-26 is no match for a Twin Otter or C-172! p-)

I recall seeing one when I was doing my Military Service. It passed at low altitude almost directly over the barracks, fire fighting bucket suspended from the cargo hook. I'll never forget the sight and sound of it.

P.S.: It was not in Hellenic Military service, but leased for the duration of the fire-fighting period.

Oh, and I wonder why Mil did not put (removable) stub wings on this one to offload the rotor in level flight as on the Mi-6. but then again, rotor design has advanced quite a bit since the Mi-6's debut...

rofl rofl rofl rofl
But I'd say it's more of a "tail-sitter" by design, to have the loading ramp closer to the ground.

Great chopper, but Venezuelans should not have went cheap and ordered the optional arm rest for the passenger (co-pilot) seat rofl

"Passenger Side Arm Rest -Added degree of comfort for you passenger. Made from molded ABS plastic, featuring soft leather cushion that matches your helicopters's interior."

I don't see it in a civilian painting p-).
It's just interesting seeing Venezuela getting all these new Russian weapons and thinking of their intentions in south America.

As much as I dislike Chavez.. I don't see that Venezuela has any sinister plans for South America or any of their neighbors. Their transformation and mlitary build up seems geared more toward internal security.

Awsome looking bird though. It's huge! Is someone compensating for something?

Dutch military is renting one to ferry post and stuff like that between Kandahar and Tarin Kowt. One crashed a few months ago killing the crew and losing alot of christmas presents.

Agree, haven't seen new tanks bought, yet.

It's not like they can conquer South America with a handful of aging AMX serie tanks. I find the modernisation of the Venezuelan military more interesting than threatening.

Well i'm thinking it can start an arms race in this area, they get a lot of good stuff from the Ruskis, Su-30 fighters are not just a walk in the park when it comes to weapons.

In central and south america an A model F-16 is considered flash and new and exciting... the general state of aircraft ownership is F-5s and A-4s and various older type Mirages.
They could do with being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, with Mirage 2000s and new Flankers and perhaps even the odd Gripen, and F-16D or later model. With the introduction of the F-35 in a few years time there should be a large number of ex NATO fighters becoming available on the second hand market and arms races will occur all round the world... of course they won't be called arms races, or destabilising, if they are US aircraft it will be given a nice name like cascading capabilities, that of course improves stability and peace in whatever region the US decides to dump them in... unless they go to the bone yard...
