If you aren't a fan of Heinlein this is not the place to start. I've read practically everything he wrote, and I enjoyed seeing where so many of jis later ideas came from.
Paul Verhoeven on Strahsip Troopers: "The movie is in fact stating that war makes fascists of us all."
"Everybody who didn't like the movie is bad in my opinion."
Awful jackass. I doubt he ever even read the book. What a half-ass translation of the combat too.
Incidently the title of "For Us, The Living" is an excerpt from the *****sburg Address.
Hey, don't rip on Paul Verhoeven, he's badass! :P
BTW the sequel wasn't done by Paul Verhoeven.

First movie was GREAT. But I'm afraid the second is going to suck; not in cinema, sucky actors,... meh.

Mark is right, the book is totally different. There are a lot of scenes brought into another context (funny is that this redhead that is following the movie hero around is man in the book...actually he is mentioned once if I rember it correctly, and only to state that he has been killed).
The society in described in the book is not a fascist one. It is mentioned that the military is actually smaller than ever, it does not rule earth (soldiers are in fact even exempt from voting, let alone holding any politica office).
The difference between this society as describes in the book is that you have served in the military to earn the right to vote. Not to miltarize you, but to show that you care for society. This is by no means conscritpion, on the contrary: to serve in the military is a RIGHT (only those that are mentally unable to understand the serving oath are exempt). If someone rolls in his wheelchair into the military personal office, and want to serve, they have to take him, even if it means to invent work for him, so he can serve his time and acquire the right to vote.
It is stated in the book that most people do not do it, they are interested in finding a job instead, military is seen as a waste of time.
But only those who show their care for the communtity may vote, and this creates (in Heinleins book) a society that acts more responsible than any before, and that is therefore more stable and peaceful.
It is then of course threatened by those insectoid baddies, which have to be fought.
However, it is interesting how Verhoeven changed all this content, to show this fascist society in his movie, even resorting to associative suggestions, the federation uniforms look quite German, especially those of the PSI corps, so everyone is reminded of the Nazis.
Still the whole movie seems to have the message: "this is cool".
Really interesting.

Someone needs to cut off Verhoeven's nuts, then remake the movie as the story is in the book. Flores (Dizzy) was a guy who gets killed in the first scene; Carl was a geek with R&D; Carmen was just a friend who shows up in a few scenes; they're all Filipino, not from Buenos Aires. Not to mention that the Mobile Infantry was an elite, armored fighting force and not a giant mob of kids with fancied up Ruger Mini-14's.
It really disappoints me that Verhoeven was able to mutilate a good book to the point of no recognition. I really would have liked to have seen the MI's powered armor in action too. ;)

Nothing against Verhoeven, he's a weird guy, but he gives us ultra violent satire. But the book should be done by a serious director, who really wants to bring over the message, not make a fun movie for teens.

Extremely dissapointed....uneeded music, wierd plot, "special effects" were okish.
Poor production values...lousy script...bad acting...cheesy special effects...more like a cheap, outer space sequel to "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" than "Starship Troopers". It's so bad, it's funny when it isn't supposed to be.
