I doubt it will ever enter service. Metal Storm has been around for a decade now and nobody's bought anything from them and nobody has any plans to buy anything either.

I doubt it's an EMP issue, but good point.

There's one fundamental problem with metal storm. Although it has an insane rate of fire, it lacks on sustained fire. Even though the rounds come out of the barrel at a million rpm, there's still only a handful per barrel. If you fire in burst, you're likely to only have a one burst or a few. Where as with belt-fed systems you can have 100, 200, up to a 1000+ rounds for sustained fire which means many bursts.

Metal storm could be used at some point, but it hasn't yet found it's niche. I still think an automated static defense system is one possibility. But it's still probably cheaper to pay some grunt private to do the same job. I don't see metal storm replacing any weapons anytime soon, but adding a unique capability we didn't have before.

are you advocating the massacre of civilians?

Isnt the problem that amount of ammunition it usually carries? With such and insane ROF it can use all the ammunition with a few seconds.

I think the only niche it could really fit is maybe missile defense on ships.

You might want to visit the company site. The US military has invested in this company. It has some innovative solutions to contempory problems.

One interesting one is the mobile mine field. There are anti-mine treaties in place, which limit the use of anti-personnel mines. MetalStorm solution is a series of banks of mines ready to be fired (think mortar) should a ground attack occur. If the mines racks are not used they can be transported to a new site leaving the ground mine free...no sapper support required and no risk of bad post-conflict media.

That idea I like.

Good Idea. I think we should buy a few for the Astan border.

The US has no plans to buy any weapon system from MetalStorm. Neither does any other country. Just because the US is investing some money in it now does not guarantee a contract later.

And it's like I said it's already been 10 years since the company was founded and despite all the prototypes, no-one is buying. It might make for a cool video and good sound bite but how many situations really call for one-million rounds a minute?

It can be set to fire at any rate. It can stay on station as long as there is power. I don't believe that all the "bugs" have been worked out.
