Hello,

I'm looking for pictures of (older) vehicles of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, especially of old armoured Land Rovers of RUC (Shorland, Hotspur, Simba, Tenba) and of the British army in Northern Ireland (Piglet, APV, Hornet Snatch).

In the following some pictures of the RUC. Please help me to identify the shown Land Rovers.

The first 3 pictures show a Humber "Pig" and a couple of Hotspurs. But they are film props and not in service.

Thank you for identification.

Do you have other pictures of the Hotspur?

They're standard Series IIIs with the armoured body kit - not the full Hotspur conversion (although the kits were also by Hotspur IIRC).

Two questions:

1. Does anyone has pictures of Tenba, Hotspur, APV, Hornet and Shorlands in Northern Ireland?

2. The following vehicles are different. Which is the Tangi and what type is the other?

That particular one there I think is privately owned. I know that one is hired out for stag and hen parties in Belfast:D:D:D

From what I've heard they used to ground themselves quite often going over high ground and they're not very fuel efficient.

2. The following vehicles are different. Which is the Tangi and what type is the other?

They are both TANGIs. The top one is an earlier model still fitted with anti -rocket armour. Its driving past Belfast City Hall and sports the new livery

The bottom one is the current version which is meant to be less aggressive looking and has only the standard plate armour and again has the very attractive PSNI livery

most of the Snatch land rovers have been sent to Iraq.
The RUC vehicles are kept in storage some have been lent to mainland forces like west yorkshire borrowed some and crews during the riots in Bradford.

My old unit too!!..I think that was BGills old truck...I have driven it and can safely say it was a heap of `manure`....bumpy leaf springs and terrible driving position but good room in the back compared to a Tangi.....d`oh!!

The first 2 pics were taken in West Belfast in the early to mid 1980s and feature DMSU Hotspurs, a mixture of 4 and 8 cylinder models. The 8 cylinder version being more powerful and benefitting from power steering. The bottom pics are again from the 80s and are from West Belfast and Portadown. They also feature DMSU vehicles and once again I think my old unit features!

The first pic was taken during the Hunger Strike in 1981 which witnessed some of the most intense and prolonged rioting ever seen. I think that picture is outside New Barnsley RUC station which at one point was almost over run. The soldiers based there were ready to use live rounds to keep the mob at bay but sustained volleys of baton rounds did the trick. Anyone seen Zulu??

The 3rd pic also shows a couple of soft skinned Landrovers - very similar to the Army version which was fitted with Makralon. One of them has "wings" which were useless but were meant to unfold and provide a barrier.

Am I correct? On this photo in the middle it is a Hotspur and on the left it's a soft skin Landrover with wings. On the right side there are VPK Land Rovers (?). Were they used by RUC or by the Army only?

And one more question: Do you have pics of the Tenba and/or Shorland (MK-1, SB-301, SB-401) Land Rovers in RUC service?

This is one of the Water Cannon belonging to the PSNI, it rarley gets used these days. AFAIK the only officers trained to actually operate it are attached to Traffic Branch (Roads Policing) as they had to go on a saftey course on how to mount and dismount the vehicle
