Well done and good luck. I just spoke with a guy with the Coast Guard, and i too may be starting service this summer. I really need to think hard about this first though. I really wanted to be with intel or SF, but since i medically am not able too, ive been told that the Coast Guard is probably the best way for me to go, other branches i might fall behind in. Of course it would be a slight drop in pay from my current job, but i want to do something for my country.
I think i mihgt also talk to a National Guard recruiter.

Congrats man, be careful over in Iraq...God bless & Godspeed to you.
yea we had about a 25% dropout rate, we started with 204 and finished with 157. and that 157 is including the injured soldiers who we picked up from earlier cycles...
no, i'm not going airborne. i actually earned the Ranger slot for my platoon, they give out 1 per platoon. but i never got the paper work for it so here i am. my drill sgt told me that when i get to 3rd ID, to get him a letter so he could call some people and at least get me into sniper school. guess he was kinda angry i didnt get that contract. but if not, we roll out in november for iraq...

Best of luck to you GLax, so their is a different basic (boot camp) for Infantry types? Did you attend infanty school and what kind of things did you do in it? I've always wanted to know what kinds of things they do at the basic infantry level.

Go Guard. It's what I'm doing. I hope to be heading out to basic training this summer, or at least as soon as the paperwork gets done.
Best of luck, GLax.

Way to go Glax. Glad to hear that you made it through BCT. So 3rdID is heading back in November you say? Thats about the same time my unit heads over there also. Hopefully a slot will open up this summer so I dont have to wait till January to go to BCT. Hoo-ah.
basic and infantry school are all combined actually, its alot different for infantry. in regular basic you spend alot of time doin b.s. stuff like d&c. but for infantry you spend the first 9 weeks learning the basics of killing and the last 5 you get into more advanced killing. we do alot more with weapons and hand to hand combat than the rest of the Army, plus our pt standards are higher, 20% higher. we also did around 75 miles worth the road marches which includes 5 or 6 (cant remember) forced marches. our regukar road marches are at an EIB pace, 3-4.5 miles an hour with full gear. that iuncludes m16a4s, 203s, 240s and 249s. we carried about 90 pounds of gear all together. i wouldnt go guard, your going to get deployed anyway, might as well get as much training as you can. no offence to you guard guys but regular Army trains quite a bit more. good training though, very intense, i recommend it.

dont be fooled!
you dont get contracts from basic, unless you enlisted for them.
allot of guys get ranger contracts, go to RIP and never make it through, they end up NOA (needs of the army) 3rd ID is starting the new manning process, thats why you are going there, and dont count on going in November, plan for January. Dont count on a damn thing your Drill Sergenat told you, he's just glad your out of his hair and looking forward to his leave before the next cycle of privates.
when you finish your leave and go to your gaining unit, they are going to put you where they need you. Its called the UMR (unit manning roster), you get assigned to a unit, the CSM sends you to a company, just stand at parade rest and (NOTE: Dont be an arrogant punk, they see right through that ****), tell him what a high speed stud you are, the 1SG of whatever company you go to puts you in a platoon. If you qualify to go to the Scout Platoon, then you have to fight for a slot to go to sniper school, and they dont normaly give them to a cherry, so for now just do your job and dont be one of those privates we end up chaptering out the first month.
If you go to 3-15, tell CSM Gallagher that SSG L... says "whats up ass!, I'm still alive".

question: whats this i hear about 3rd ID building a new Brigade? what kind of Brigade is it exatly? i talked to a guy at the airport who is in 3rd (going emergency on leave) and he said his unit is getting converted to an Armored Recon Battlaion and theyre adding more dismount units, can you help me clear some of the confusion up? cuz i also heard about 3rd building a Stryker brigade.
ugh, the life of a Private...

They arent getting converted to anything, the only change is the support units being leveled out to the brigades as an organic attachment, that makes them a BCT, which is what they had a problem with once we started setting up AO's in Iraq. you arent getting Strykers, the only units getting Strykers are th 3rd brigade 2nd ID (in Iraq now), 1st Brigade 25th ID (my unit, replacing the 2nd ID this summer), 172nd (alaska) and some guard unit in PA later this year, and rumor has it another unit at fort polk.
Plan on staying at Benning or Stewart your whole enlistment, unless you enlisted for more than 6years, its this whole stabalization thing, but you will go to Iraq soon (ie in the next 8 months), for now just pay attention to your squad and team leaders, learn all you can, Basic is over, the real army is nothing like it, just do your job and listen to what they tell you, dont be one of those basic training guys that no one likes, remember .... everyone else went to basic too, they have the same "Drill sergeant stories" you do, so dont talk about them, casue no one gives a ****.
Basic's over dude, welcome to the real ****. hope its everything you thought it would be

oh really,
dont worry, i'm not one of those guys ****monkey. i'm looking forward to geting to Stewart and learning. never really got in trouble at basic, just stupid private stuff. i never was much of a talker during basic, we were all doing the same thing so there wasnt anything to talk about anyway. i was actually kind of surprised when my DSgt called me into his office and made me a fire team leader. i didnt think he even knew my name for a long time there. not only did he know my name, he even ****ounced it correctly, very rare indeed...

Good advice ****monkey.
Just remember you are the lowest on the food chain and act accordingly. Use your ears 95% of the time and your mouth the rest and you will do fine.
Tell your boss during your platoon comander interview what you want to do and if your performance is good enough you might get what you want.
Good luck.
