While I wouldn't call it a new helo.

It looks kick-ass, I understand the W-3it has only been exported to 2 countries. With those being Czech Rep. and Burma.

Not bad...for a Polish design.

Maybe if they market the design to some Latin American countries, they'll have even more success. I do agree with you, it's quite a nice little hoss.

An optronics turret has been fitted above the cockpit, an IRCM jammer and maybe a full protection suite added, and the fixed GSh-23L on the stbd side has been replaced by an undernose turret for the WKM-B HMG.
Why am I repeating all this? Just see the caption below the first photo...p-)

I would suggest them to paint it plain green like in the first photo because that green/brown camo...well...p-)

Well, at last something is going on in the "Głuszec" programm. Too bad the SW-4 won't have an armed version. Does anybody know how many machines will be modernized to the W-3PL version? O yeah, one more thing. Does the polish markings have to be so big? Is there a law that tells to paint the white and red chessboard in that size? In my opinion a much smaller marking would do the same. I like the green NATO camouflage. It's way better then the ridiculous and useless green and brown, not mention the yellow and green camouflage of the prior versions.

I see they have a fetish for eastern choppers. p-)

I saw W-3PL few days ago above Lublin i knew it is something new (optical "head" above cocpit)
W-3 serves in:
Poland -122
Czech rep. -11
Burma -10
South Korea -12 but one crashed
Spain -1
Germany -2
United Arab Emirates -1
Vietnam -?
Russia -?
Nigeria -1
(data from 2003 but no new W-3 where produced sinc then so prabably acurate)

What is the size comparison of the W-3 to any other helicopter? Is it in the class of the old Huey or a Puma?

Dark Avenger
02-16-2007, 02:10 PM
Closer to the Huey.

Yep, we should paint ALL chopters with that dark green and it would be ok. The szachownica should be low-vision for me.

gunturret seems a bit underpowerd though

I'd suggest at least a 20mm cannon like the Romanian Socat's (Giat?)

Dark Avenger
02-16-2007, 02:59 PM
Funny thing is that they have already tried a 20mm turret a the W-3 variant, the W-3K that incorporated South African systems.

And (@ Sp2c) yes, the IAR-330L SOCAT has a GIAT THL-20 turret with a M-621 cannon. :)

Little misunderstanding here: it's not NEW helicopter. It was built in the late 70s.
It's just its upgraded version.
