Besides the energy resources, Putin places military complex as the pilar of economic diversificaiton of Russia. Basicaly a copy of US system, which could mean that a new arms race is to happen.

MOSCOW, February 15 (RIA Novosti) - The significance of the Russian General Staff will steadily grow in the future, President Vladimir Putin said at a Defense Ministry board session Thursday.
Putin has appointed Anatoly Serdyukov, 45, who headed the Federal Tax Service for the last three years, as new defense minister, replacing Sergei Ivanov.
"I certainly hope that the ministry, at least the part of it that deals with development, will pay close attention to the economic and financial components [of defense activities]," Putin said.
"At the same time, the significance of the military component, the significance of the General Staff, will certainly become even higher than it is now," the president said.
He also reiterated the need to use the potential of the Russian defense industry to ensure further innovative development of the country's economy.
"Our defense industry has been showing steady development, and we should use everything that it has to satisfy the needs of the civilian sector [of the economy]," Putin said.
Putin more and more come off as Adolf Putin. Many similarities indeed.

Russia is getting STRONG!!!!1111....gly popular:)
for example?
That's the person who comes to mind given the total picture with nationalism, aggressive foreign policy in every shape, form and direction, rhetorics, justifications, promotion of a personal power base, weakened democracy and rule of law, sudden violent deaths of dissidents, possible upcoming anschluss policy regarding Belarus, Ukraine and other nations. And in this short article the expressed hopes of building an economic momentum based on drastically increased defense spendings.

I don't see anything funny with Thor's comments, actually his comments are way more realistic than most of comments posted in this thread.
Russians seek the Soviet/Fascist nationalism by getting inspired with totalitarian leaders such as Putin, at least following the history of Putin's leadership concerning democracy, the interests and the way Russians perceive it everything goes down to this point.

I will take the total collapse and failure of a political system and the empire whose thumb it imposed its rule over and the turning of the antagonist country into a shadow of its former self - with out directly firing a shot - as victory any day of the week.

What did you win?
What's the prize?
A chance to be the global policemean that everyone loves to hate? The opportunity to impale your military on the stake of a number of extremely costly, open-ended conflicts? The bitter resentment of the 'vanquished' on whose energy supplies you will come to depend on more and more?
Is it the prestige of having 'defeated' this 'empire' you speak of (and what a laugh that is) by outspending it? Congratulations. If only all victories were so fulfilling, dolt.
and the turning of the antagonist country into a shadow of its former self
And then you wonder why the Russians would consider the United States a threat to their security. Taking pleasure in the misery of another won't earn you his friendship. But, then again, the US has never been interested in partners - merely constables. It has become the Hobbesian Leviathan.

Indeed?
Name some US partners. I will show you that they are merely constables. A hyperpower isn't interested in partners. It isn't interested in a multipolar world. Its interest is best served by unilateralism coupled with bilateral lip service. This is basic Western political science. I'm giving you a theoretical approach already being taught at Western universities.

I have always noticed that the most rabid anti-russians live in countries where they have next to no contact with them and have never been in their countries. It is the second generations Ukranian Canadians or Polish Canadians who always have some opinions on the country they claim to love, but never been to. Poles from Poland and Ukranians from Ukrain usually get on with Russians extremely well. Heck even the Baltick people often prefer to hang around with Russians. Hmmm, maybe us Russians are not so bad as people once you actually get to know us.

Poland is not considered an important potential adversary, it is simply too small. Now if there were problems with China and America on the other hand, than i'm sure that sort of stuff would happen, as it happens in every country.
