It depends, I personally like The North Face, Colombia, and Mountain Hardware.

North Face blows.
That being said, it depends on the kinds of fleece you are comparing. Polartec 300 is going to be different than Gore Windstopper if that's all you are wearing.
I never really liked Columbia or North Face for anything they made out of fleece. If it isn't that cold, I wear an old Cabela's Titan jacket (Gore Windstopper). If it is really ****ing cold, which it has been getting around here these past few weeks with the wind, i'll wear the 13$ Polartec 200 fleece pullover I got from Sam's under it. A thin layer under something to block the wind is going to be 100% more warm than a huge one-piece thing.

A thin layer on top of something would probably do even better, don't you think? More heated air retention instead of having air enter through the fleece layer...

The Military ECWCS fleece and the NF Denali both use Polartec 300 fleece. So the warmth should be identical. However, I think Columbia uses their own brand of fleece. Who knows, it could be from the same factory.

I think Columbia uses a different material. I've had a lot of luck with their products though. The softshell jackets are awesome (see profile pic). I've had mine for a few years now though and it's beginning to lose its waterproofing.

A polartec 300 is not supposed to be worn as an outerlayer on a windy day.
I like the SPEAR one, when it comes to light windstoppers/softshells its the Arcteryx
Bravo jacket for me, for warmer ones the SORD fom Down under.

So we'd better wearing a parka outside it

why do PMC's or SF wear fleece when it looks fairly hot outside? (As seen in pictures in Iraq and Afghanistan)

Sunny days may look warm but they can be quite chilly tough, especially at high altitudes.

Sure, the layering system always works fine for me, but it also depends the degree of physical activity you're doing.
The most important thing to consider is not too overheat!!

Did you ever sleep outside, at an altitude of 3000 meter +, with temperatures of -38 oC ?
Because those are moments when the free fleece might not be the wisest choice.

Wait a minute- I thought the fleece jackett was intended to wear around the FOB or the local mall.
I agree, hanging out at 9,843 ft and temp. of -38.C would suck - it you had a fleece jackett.

You don't need the snivel gear, even at frigginohmytoesrefreezin below zero, didn't have it on AMF ftx in Norway way back when I was a young Stud....but it sure makes life easyer.
