After reading about the hk416, and hearing again about the aging (but not ageless) m4/m16 problems again, i had to wonder about the g36, and if the US military even considered adopting this rifle. Along with the benefits of a newer, up-to-date primary assault weapon, and having clear mags among other benefits, shouldn't it outgun (no pun intended) the m4/m16 ?

I think the only reason is that it is plentiful in stock.

US G36 = XM8, just with a few US specific modifications.

How does the G36 outgun the M16 series? What are the "benefits of a newer, up-to-date primary assault weapon"? The G36 is basically an AR-18 wrapped in polymer.

5.56 weapons systems have been pretty much the same for the last 30 years, it's basically just a question of how designers wrap them up and how they can stick gadgets on them.

the reason is that is the answer to a problem that doesn't exist
