I am looking at buying an M14 and was wondering what manufacture would be able to fit needs I see fit.
Another question is what would you recommend getting in order to improve performance.
Thanks in advance.

LRB/SEI
Contact Ron Smith at Smith Enterprise, Inc. (http://www.smithenterprise.com/products02.html) and have him build you a custom M14 on a forged LRB receiver.
A Crazy Horse M-14 SDM with the new M80 heat treatment would do the trick :)

H20 Man;
No doubt these are sweet looking M14's but how does a civilian order just 1 rifle? There website appears like they are only dealing with government orders in large quantities.
Secondly, why no recommendation of Springfield? They are relatively cheap, probably much less expensive than the Crazy Horse, and of good quality. I have two and can say they are the most accurate semi-auto rifles around. I really don't see how dropping another $1,000 into a Crazy Horse will improve upon what I have now? Thoughts?

The man asked for a custom M14 ~
No doubt your Springfield rifles are fine shooters, (mine was) but comparing a Springfield to a SEI build is not fair to the Springer.
Visit the SEI web site for details and a list of options. Speak to Ron for specifics.
Civilians can get custom builds from SEI, just call Ron and get in line.
I have had two rifles built for me by SEI and I'm just a plain old civilian.
All military work takes priority (as it should) civilian work does get set aside as needed. Be patient, it's worth the wait.

H20 Man,
With risk of getting jumped on, can you answer two questions regarding the SEI? How much is a M14SE “CRAZY HORSE”® SQUAD DESIGNATED MARKSMAN (M14SE SDM) rifle?
Secondly, what are the benefits beyond a NM Springfield? It can't be much more accurate or reliable. A National Match Springfield shoots 1 MOA and is as dependable as they come.
I Don't want to start another Trijicon thread but am curious since I am an M14 enthusiast.

To keep it simple and because I can't cut-n-paste here ... visit The Firing Line (http://www.m14firinglineforum.com/upload/index.php?) and read this thread. (http://www.m14firinglineforum.com/upload/showthread.php?t=37591)
Feel free to post additional question there.

Well, I'll take a shot at your question.
#1. What are your needs that you need fit? Will you be using the rifle in High Power Comp or just shooting cans at the range?
#2. Here is what I would do for performance. I would but a stock or "service" rifle and then join a club and start shooting in some matches. If you buy a custom rifle to start with you will be spending some $$$ (Heck, a stock M1A ain't cheap) and will have a long wait. If you buy a stock M1A and join a club you and the rifle can grow together and if you work hard one day you will be better than the gun, then you will know what needs to be done to improve performance.
